Guest Eza
I know someone whos looking to get a dog and wants to do some training with the dogs so it will bark on command and can hold a defensive stance. Does anyone know anywhere in SA that does it? Whats the best suited temprement for a dog who will do this type of training? Its not necceceraly attack training as such but to make the dog look aggressive. Thanks
Tonymc
Eza,yes attack training is the wrong terminology and has all sorts of incorrect connotations.I do understand what you mean though. If the Person you know is looking for somebody in S.A., send Mark S a pm.he is in Adelaide and a member of this site as well. Poodle wrangler
A well-trained, athletic-looking medium to large dog always looks impressive as a deterrent. You just get them to walk calmly to the door with you, say "sit" (as if they might otherwise lunge to attack :D ) and "stay". My elderly Mum used to do this with our athletic boxer and people would be very wary of the dog who had a beautiful, non-aggressive nature. We never had to test the dog's protective qualities. For some reason, more people are afraid of black dogs, too.
haven
You don't need 'attack training', just teach the dog to stand and speak on command and use a command like guard instead of speak. I doubt anyone is going to test the dog and find out if he knows more than that :D
Guest Eza
Thanks guys. I did mention bark on command but they would like it to "look" tough too. I found MarkS's website Ill pass that on to them.
cavNrott
Thanks guys.I did mention bark on command but they would like it to "look" tough too. I found MarkS's website Ill pass that on to them. Why do they want a 'tough looking' dog. I have my doubts that any reputable rescue would want to rehome a dog whose potential owners are only interested in 'tough looking' and attack trained. dogdude
Bull Terriers are a huge deterrent to most people, just don't expect them to actually physically protect your property! A kirby salesman once came over to do a demo, and when I ducked out to the kitchen to make a coffee, I came back in to find him standing on the backrest of my couch.. back to the wall! Never had a bible basher on my doorstep for ten years! If they only knew what wooses they are! Why is it that they want a tough looking dog though?? In most cases self defence classes or penile extensions have more use in the long run for many people who request those traits in a dog!
Tonymc
Dogdude,we cannot jump to conclusions or make assumptions here.Could well be a Lady living by herself wanting to feel more secure. Tony
Kobayashi
Some people do like to do some attack training as a security measure. If i ever start this bloody mining job, i wouldn't mind willow knowing a couple of commands to protect the OH if someone comes in. ATM, willow would help someone carry out the TV if she had opposable thumbs
dogdude
Sorry Tonymc, but I have not jumped to any conclusions or made any assumptions. I simply stated an unrelated fact that is clearly relevant to the thread. It was typed out in the hope that the morons who want an accessory, and not a dog, think twice. Besides that, the OP hasn't indicated what the dog will be used for. I am not a fan of people who feel they need to walk the streets with a protection dog. There are so many far more practicle solutions in most cases that do not involve dogs. Perhaps before any advice is given to the OP we really need to know more! MarkS
Hi Eza Sure feel free to have your friend contact me. I am one that believes anyone is entitled to own a protection trained dog. As long as this person is responsible, capable of handling such a dog, and is willing to put the work into the dog to maintain the training. I personally will not train protection dogs for just anyone. Secondly, a properly trained pp dog is not a danger, if trained in the correct hands and in the correct manner, and is maintained by a responsible person. Also I am very particular as to who I will train dogs for, and the type of dogs. Cheers everyone.
Guest Eza
Sorry I wasnt back soon. The person is my brother, he does shift work so wants the girlfriend to be able to call the dog to bark and look tough but also be called off. (Im not really explaining this well but they dont actually want it to attack as such). I will be doing obed training with the dog, it will also be attending an obed club from a puppy so will be well socialised. They dont actually have a dog as yet but have looked at a few breeder (and I believe have made contact with some). Im just getting him information at this stage. Thank you MarkS. I will pass your details on and once they have a dog Im sure they will contact you. Thank you for the breed recommendation dogdude, at the moment they are looking into GSDs. Poodle wrangler
No offence intended, but they should probably look to other measures (security) as well. I understand wanting to feel secure as I've spent time on my own (or with only very young children) in large houses in dodgy areas minus a dog in the past. I know many women who are scared to sleep alone in their own homes (no break-in history), but it is something you get used to. Hell, I've only got poodles for protection sometimes . Best wishes for your friends- it would be sad for them to get a dog for the wrong reasons, or get a dog that looks tough, but is otherwise unsuited to them.
