Itchy Old Dog, Advice Needed

Saw my aunt and uncle yesterday and they asked me for advice about their old dog Jess. Jess is a maltese x silky and is a sprightly 12 year old. Over the last few months however she has developed an itch and continually scratches. My aunt has started putting a little singlet on her as this seems to be the only way to stop the scratching. Jess' skin and fur appear normal, but she does feel hot to touch. She has been to the vet, and the vet is giving her cortisone injections but my aunt is a bit concerned about giving these over a long period of time. I suggested that a naturopathic approach may help. Does anyone know of a good vet in the Blacktown area who amy be able to help?

Your Aunty may want to give cortisone Tablets rather than the injections. If the singlet is helping that would probably suggest it's a contact allergy.

Holistic Vets can be hard to find and you would most likely need to travel.

Here's one in Russel Lea: http://www.naturalvet.com.au/index.html

Cromer: http://www.drrossperry.com.au/dogs/index.php

Sydney: http://www.acaciaanimalcare.com/practice_profile.htm

There is a great Australian website that you can buy holistic type medicines for allergies, I know there is another one but for the moment I can't think of the address: http://www.holisticanimalmedicines.com/index.php?gPath=43_45

There is this one too, it stinks to high heaven though: http://www.animalitch.com.au/Small.htm

Colloidal Silver is also meant to be great: http://www.colloidalsilvergel.com/order_%2...silver_gel.html

Cooling coats can help take out the heat: http://www.silvereagleoutfitters.com.au/k9_cooling_vest.htm as well as cooling beds: http://www.mypet.net.au/CanineCooler.htm

Robert McDowell dog treatments

Daisy, Robert McDowell is my pick of holistic practitioners. Here's a link to his site, his skin allergy mix has worked wonders for Ruby. I sent an e-mail and got a reply within a day or two. I followed his suggestions (skin allergy mix, blood poisoning mix) and they had an affect within a week. It was amazing to see her go from constantly scratching, bleeding skin, hair loss...to a normal dog with almost no scratching, no irritation.

Know this is fairly obvious, but is your aunt brushing right down to the dog's skin? Common mistake not to (guilty here).

Combing through afterwards to remove any knots?

You have to part the fur with one hand, brush with the other and so on.

This will help the coat and skin to "breathe" instead of being clogged up with dirt/dust/ knots etc. Particularly important in warm, humid weather.

Certainly does no harm

A soothing shampoo like Alloveen?
