kja
We always thought potatoes were bad for dogs, but as I've been scouring the net the past few days I thought I came across a reference that said mashed potatoes were NOT bad for dogs. Now I can't find it! Does anyone know? Not that we have a lot of leftover mashed potatoes very often, but it's more for my own curiosity than anything! First Time Puppy Owner
Hi this is from the General Health Thread in the pinned section! http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=81686 Potatoes Solanum alkaloids can be found in green sprouts and green potato skins, which occurs when the tubers are exposed to sunlight during growth or after harvest. The relatively rare occurrence of actual poisoning is due to several factors: solanine is poorly absorbed; it is mostly hydrolyzed into less toxic solanidinel; and the metabolites are quickly eliminated. Cooked, mashed potatoes are fine for dogs, actually quite nutritious and digestible.
