BrunoBella
Just wondering what sport GSP/Pointer owners feel their dogs like the most.... I am trying to decide which to do with my dogs. They are both very fit and love chasing butterflies. Thanks BellasPerson Edited December 19, 2007 by BellasPerson
sidoney
My Vizslas adore the running and teamwork in agility. They are quite alike to the GSPs.
BrunoBella
Thanks Sidoney I have added Vizslas to my topic now! What about hunting like activities? Anyone do any of those? BellasPerson
sidoney
Mine love to go into the field and quarter and point, although I've never done any shooting with them. In the dim dark past I've taken a dog or two to stubble fields and they have a great time looking for quail. Any place really where they can hunt for game. When they point it is an outstanding sight. I have to admit I've never trained mine to be steady on the flush!
BOF
I'm very biased but my guys (3 x GSPs) just love doing Gundog Working Test. Not available in all states but if you are in NSW it is run quite regularly (in conjunction with obedience trials). My last 2 pups have competed at 9-10 months (successfully) so it's not hard to teach them. Have heard a rumour (??) that the Vizsla club of NSW will be having a training day next year. In summer time they all love retrieving from water which keeps them nice and cool.
FHRP
IMO seeing the pointing breeds do what they are bred for is where you will see them in their element. I have not competed in Field Trials but have started training with my new pup and it is just amazing to see the instinct and sheer love of the 'game'. I compete in Retrieving with my younger Vizsla and aim to with the GSP and this is a close second to Field work. Both these sports take considerale time and dedication and not normally done at your local dog training club. Both Vizslas, and hopefully the GSP, compete regularly (and some what succesfully) in agility and have a great time. For local training club offered sports, this would be top of the list. I'm afraid Obedience doesn't even come close Oh, my younger Vizsla goes absoutely nuts for lure coursing.... the older boy couldn't care less. BrunoBella
Thanks everyone. I am leaning to doing some type of gundog sport. We love going for long walks and will soon (in two days or so) have a remote trainer so they can go off lead. I'm in Brisbane. Where would I do Gundog Field Trials or Retrieving from water. I don't want to compete or anything, we just all want to have some pointing/pseudo hunting fun . Sidoney, is the quarter and point an organised thing or do you do this yourself? BrunoBella
Thanks FHRP. I'll have to hide my two in Vizsla outfits to join the Vizsla club BP
Monah
OOh, vizsla stuff. My viz yawns at obed acts like a twit at agility, but LOVES ;) flyball!! she loves it to death, good for me because I don't have to get puffed out!! But I'm sure she would love tracking if there was somewhere nearby that did it. They pretty much just love it all, love life. Wow, FHRP, I had no idea Bundaberg had a gundog club!!! You are certainly full of usefull information!
BrunoBella
I don't really have Vizslas but I've been assured they are the same as GSPs. I might try something in the field as they love their hunting and would really enjoy that.
sidoney
Sidoney, is the quarter and point an organised thing or do you do this yourself?BellasPerson Not sure what you mean here. It's just very informal, I go into the paddock, the dogs seek game and point it. They like it and I like to watch it. They do have good recalls so I don't lose them. BrunoBella
Was I confusing - how unusual It sounds like what my dogs would like. Where do you do this? At a dog club of some sort or at your place? My two don't have perfect recall yet so have to wait for my remote trainer. Christmas mail is delaying it. Thank you BP
sidoney
Not formal at all, it's just what they do naturally when I run them in paddocks. I suppose the trick is to find somewhere that they can find things. Mind you I may be stuffing them up totally for proper organised hunting, but since I don't do that, I don't really mind. And it's a chance for me to see some of their natural behaviours. I would not call it a "sport", not what I am doing, so I don't want to mislead you there. It's purely a recreational walk where I get to see them hunt and point. If you wanted to do it in a more organised way, there would be people who do it up there ... Vizsla people the McKays know how to hunt with their dogs properly. They are in Brisbane and would be able to point you in the right direction. www.aranyoz.com
Monah
Just wondering, mine love to retrieve in water too. Are there any such things as 'fake' ducks etc. soft ones, that are suitable for this? My Spinone in particular would love it and has a very soft mouth. She'd dive into ice if it meant retrieving something! The viz loves it too, but is more particular about water temperature Queenslander! I've seen (we have) furry ducks that quack, for the dogs, but they are not in any way waterproof and don't float. Any ideas gratefully accepted.xxxxx Sidoney, mine love a ramble to go pointing too.
sidoney
I have some dummies made out of fire hose stuffed with tennis balls. Is that the sort of thing you mean, or do you mean with feathers? What about a bit of pool noodle, say with a fluffy sock thingy around it? My first V., Amy, would go into water on cold and frosty mid-winter mornings if there were birds in there. I don't live any more on a property with dams and water birds so I don't know if the current ones would. Monah
The pool noodle idea is perfect!!! I have a few already, kids outgrew them. Thanks xxxx
sidoney
Goody. It just came to me while I was typing about the firehoses with tennis balls. I don't think there were such things as pool noodles when I first got them.
peninsula.animal.aid
Hi all, I own a female GSP and I have done different things with her. I have done obedience, she got to level 3, and she was quite good at it actually which is surprising! I've also done flyball, which she loved. If only she would have gotten the ball... She does agility aswell and loves that, she is so good at it! Would love to get her into field/retrieving trials though... so she can do what she was bred for! ;) Ashleigh
