Does anybody know if you can get a single distemper vaccination in Australia and if so which drug company produces it.

I know you can get single parvo vaccines

Distemper only vaccinations have been available previously but are no longer produced in Australia.

I have vague recollections that one of the US companies is / was going to be producing univalent core vaccinations, as I seem to remember seeing a poster for them at the WSAVA conference.

So if they are available in the US - is it possible to import a single shot into Australia - or would customs not allow it and the cost be huge?

I was sure they were available in the US since most toller owners do their baby parvo and distemper vaccinations 2 weeks apart.

I have my vet checking it out for me - but trying to beat him to it and hoping for a positive answer. Maybe it is wishful thinking......

Can I ask why Ptolomy? Has your dog failed a titre score for distemper?

ETA or are you worried about reactions and just want to space administering vaccines?

Distemper titre levels have come back low, parvo levels are still very high.

The breed has auto-immune problems due to over vaccinating and the dog in question is allergic to everything under the sun.......

So madly trying to find out what my options are so I can make an informed decision. It isn't a case of things being black and white.

What is the frequency of dogs getting distemper - not the vaccination I mean the disease? Mainly you hear about Parvo outbreaks so I would wonder is it a real issue for the dog to be low if the chances of the dog coming into contact with the potential pathogen is low to non-existent.

Probably already thought that through but thought I would throw it out there.

Incidence of distemper is very low in WA. Mine also has a very high parvo score (80) and low distemper (20). I did not revaccinate.

If you are looking at J Dodds vaccine protocol she does not suggest revaccinating a dog even if it has low titre levels, as long as it still has some immunity.

Yes she does still have some immunity 1:5 (which is in the revaccinating range). Parvo is > 80 and for this reason I will not do a C3

Yes I know the incidence of distemper is low in WA - madly researching that at the moment.

As a kid our lab died of distemper and I still remember it now - so need to gather as much info as possible to make the informed decision. Also we run a boarding kennel so need to make sure my dogs and boarding dogs are not at risk.

This is what I have been told about titre tests.

If the titre test is low it does not mean that the vaccine is low in the dogs body. It means that the dog has not come in contact with the disease because the anti bodies have not multiplied.

If the test comes back high it means that the dog has been in contact with the disease and the anti bodies multiplied and did their job by protecting the dog from the disease.
