ShesaLikeableBiBear
We feed Nutro Natural Choice puppy food to our 12 week old puppy, at this stage she gets three meals a day, and she is putting on weight. Poodle wrangler
Are you up-to-date with worming? Pups need worming every 2 weeks. Best is Drontal as it covers all the intestinal worms- every 2 weeks- amount depending on pup's weight. What does pup look like? Can you see/ feel the backbones and hip bones very easily? It can be hard to gauge correct weight for pups unless you have some experience and many people say their pup/ dog is underweight when in fact they're a healthy weight. There are so many fat dogs around that you can lose perspective.
Toohey
Raw meaty bones such as chicken wings, lamb flaps and lamb necks are naturally fatty, great eating, and healthy
Nekhbet
up the amount of food given, remember pups are meant to be a bit leaner. If her spins, hips and ribs are showing then swap. Get the hamburger mince (preservative free) as it has a higher fat content. I would try a different brand of dog food like Royal Canin/Eagle Pack/Nutrience, some breeds need better quality food and because the pup is going to be a solid dog get a large breed formula and grow the dog slooooooooooowly eggs and cheese isnt really the best start to the day, give dry food/fatty mince in the morning, dry and night and a lighter meal in the evening. This way the pup has time to digest the food and not use too much of its already stored reserves
brandybaby
Thanks everyone Brandy is a british bulldog and you definately cannot see her bones or ribs. To me she looks very well fitted out. She looks healthy and happy.I worm her every month as she is 5 months and the vet said that is fine. But....When we register her in a show and she comes up against the other bulldogs, she is no where near as fat as them.We dont even get a look in as she looks like I starve her compared to the others. I think she is well within her standards weight, the vet thinks she is a bit overweight as it is. I am confused and thought that the best way to have a chance of winning was to fatten her up. We already give her hamburger mince with soaked optimum dry food so i will just change this to be her morning feed and see how she goes for a while. As she has a squashed in mouth and chokes alot I worry about giving her bones as the breeder suggested no bones . She does scoff her food so bones are very limited and only under supervision. I love this pup to bits and all i want is for her to be seen as a healthy CORRECT size bulldog in the ring! thanks again
Kavik
It is more important for your dog to be the right weight for your dog's size and build than to be the ideal weight for the standard or to match others in the ring, regardless of whether the others are fat or not. sidoney
Yup, for the sake of the dog's health, grow her lean, and put her back in the ring when she's matured. A bit of patience now for the sake of the health of your dog will pay dividends later.
brandybaby
thanks everyone for those reasons thats why i havent pushed the food thing. i was starting to panic that she is underweight but i think she looks great I suppose I can be the perason in the ring that helps others get their points easier LOL. One way to get my experience up in the ring to. thanks again
Clyde
. As she has a squashed in mouth and chokes alot I worry about giving her bones as the breeder suggested no bones . I was speaking to a BB breeder today who also said the same thing. Apparently Optimum is the best kibble for BB's, as the more premium foods make the dogs too hot due to higher protein.... skin issues soon follow. Anyway, could be the same breeder but her dogs looked top notch and were raised on Optimum.
