WreckitWhippet
I know, how can it be I'm slowly making the transition to raw and whilst I will most likely not ever feed only raw, I'd like the dogs to be on a high % of raw food. All of the dogs love it, with the exception of one of my boys. It doesn't matter if it's lamb flap, chicken necks, wings, carcass, lamb necks or shanks, he is just not interested. Put a bowl of dry down and it's gone in minutes. His brother on the other hand, dislikes dry and eats it with a look of disgust on his face, yet he loves his raw food. What to do with the boy ? tough love and not feed him for a couple of days, in the hope he will change his mind and get hungry enough ? He used to eat wings and necks as a youngster but has gone off all raw
Poodle wrangler
Bleeding obvious, but does he have any teeth/ mouth/ throat/ jaw problems that makes the raw food difficult to eat for him? Doesn't like raw? MAdness
Cavandra
Perhaps he is being lazy, and thinks it is far easier to scoff down a few pellets LOL Make sure he doesnt have tonsilitis, usually they are finicky about all food though I must admit. How about getting your carcasses ground down to mince, and coat the dry with mostly mince, then start adding small pieces of bone like wing tips cut into smaller bits & add those, then work up to bigger & bigger pieces. When I feed my tiny babies chicken necks I cut them into tiny slithers with my chicken scissors, so that they are almost transparent, if they swallow whole it doesnt matter as they are small enough not to worry about, I gradually make the pieces thicker & thicker til they can eat a whole neck, you might have to go back to baby steps with him til he remembers how much he likes it Sometimes they can get pack behaviour over bones also, are you sure that his brother or another dominant one in the pack isnt eye balling him warning him not to eat it, I have seen this within someone elses pack before. poodlefan
Is the raw cold when you give it Warls? If so, letting it heat to room temp or warming with hot water may help.
wylie
One of the ways to start fussy dogs on raw is to quickly fry in a very hot pan on all sides. Do not cook you are simply browning the outside. It should be still totally raw on the inside. Let it cool and then feed. We have started a number of older dogs like this with things like chicken thighs and drumsticks. The browning gets less and less and they get the idea very quickly. MAdness No, he's a young dog with good teeth, he chews on other shit that he shouldn't , so there's no probs there and the vet was very thorough last time he was in there I agree with the madness. I'll try browning and then i think it's going to be tough love and tough titties for the boy
poodlefan
It's not one of the Pugs is it?
WreckitWhippet
It's not one of the Pugs is it? Hell no, they are garbage disposal units It's one of the Pointer brothers Cavandra, I feel in seperate pens and I feed three at a time and there are walls where they can't see each other and eyeball. I'm super fussy on feeding and making sure that everyone only eats their food and I like to see exaclty who leaves fod, if it ever happens. I don;t think it's a pack issue , as he's the top of the kennel dogs and he will eat his dry like there's not going to be a tomorrow Edited December 12, 2007 by Warley
poodlefan
Just checking Warls.. I seem to recall reading something about the capacity to inhale food in the Pug standard. I wonder if Lil has any Pug in her.
Guest Pandii
Mine wont touch a raw barf mix unless it is frozen Tehy will not eat roo or chicken mince unless it is frozen Now I feed all their meat frozen, I have tried chicken mince raw both hot and cold and warm, cooked, mixed with raw vegies, cooked vegies and with gravy or cooked oats, nothing worked, Now I just throw all their meat in the freezer in portion size and throw it our frozen, the extra chewing keeps them happy longer, and I find it helps with ear set They also eat whole frozen bunnies, complete with fur and they dont stop until its all gone I do worry in winter about cold bellies and tongues stuck to iced meat, b
Lemonlime
Our German Shepherd wont eat raw either. I supervise them while they eat raw and my Borders finish quickly and look at me for more, while my Shep is still tackling her first bone...she gets kibble only now, I get sick of waiting for her to eat raw lol
persephone
Warley, will he eat bones? if he chews bones, maybe he could start with that... say if he has a meaty beef bone..then offer some mince /chopped beef? maybe ? I don't know! he must be a very modern dog..."what the hell is this RAW stuff? Where's my processed food? " LOL
Staffyluv
Ollie won't eat anything raw or slightly cooked either - he likes his tucker cooked, meat and three veg every night and dry in the mornings... We tried all sorts of things to get him to eat raw years ago and finally gave in and just cooked it... Good luck Jodie
JulesP
Have you tried some raw mince with his dry? Gradually reduce the dry and add bigger chunks of meat, then see if you can add some small bits of lamb flap, chicken wings etc.
cazxxz
Have you tried crumbling stock cubes over the food? That's one idea I've heard can help the transition from dry food to raw. And gradually reduce the amount of stock used. Maybe that was only for the vegetables though I wonder when Jake will stop being such a guts! I thought BARF was meant to be satisfying.. he really is a bottomless pit.
WreckitWhippet
I've got the chicken mince out for him ( the others have the good stuff ) and by Dog, he will eat it, or it's time for tough love
WreckitWhippet
We had our first win last night. A bowl of mince and two very large chicken wings. He ate because he'd been knocking it back for two days I could hear him in the kennel growling and guarding it ( not that anyone could get to it ) and when I went in 5 minutes later, it was gone anyone
