mita
Tibetan Spaniels can run like the wind. They're the only small breed with hare-feet like the sighthounds. It would be great if there was an organised dog running sport they could participate in. If some Tibbies could do so.... & do well & enjoy it, it would be something to recommend to new Tibbie owners. Because they're cute little dogs with beautiful coats, many people assume they're lapdog types. But they are confident, sturdy & very speedy dogs on those harefeet. Our neighbours called their Tibbie 'Brock' after Peter Brock because of his running speed. The fastest one I've met is Brock's 'cousin'...a small female, Sammi, who is a blur when running. So I'd be interested to know if there is a running sport that such a small dog could take part in.

Scarlet
Varicool's Harvey does lurecoursing.
mita
Thank you for the info! Lure-coursing sounds perfect. If a Chi like Harvey can do it, so could a Tib. I'd thought that the smallest dogs which could take part would be whippets.
bridgie_cat
I believe Hesa has done it with her shelties I havnt been to it before - but would love to in the future - my understanding was that it is for any dog that likes to run!
mita
BC, after reading the replies, I looked up the Lure Coursing Qld website...& found that even tho' it's usually thought of with the sighthounds, other breeds take part. I found in the race results chihuahuas, cocker spaniels, poodles. We used to have Shetlies...with a male Sheltie that would have loved something like this. But the real speedy ones are the Tibbies. Sammi easily beat a whippet in just a made-up race at the park. So I'd love to see Tibs get into it.
poodlefan
Lily my toy poodle courses up a storm. She "gives tongue" all the way round. I suggest you take a crate if you go Mita. I've had a couple of sighthound people ask me to have Lil put away when their dogs course and I'm happy to oblige - you don't want your Tibbies confused for prey. PossumCorner
Tibetan Spaniels can run like the wind. They're the only small breed with hare-feet like the sighthounds. ... So I'd be interested to know if there is a running sport that such a small dog could take part in. Mum had a Tibetan Spaniel a few years ago, we didn't do lure coursing with her, didn't know about it, but I think she would have been too sooky to run, she came from an over-sheltered confined background and was very clingy but I'm sure that's not typical. A little rescue fellow we have now is (possibly) a Pom cross Sheltie. He's not over-keen on lure coursing, tends to lose interest pretty quickly: although he totally loves flyball training, so that could be another thought for any small dog with a good turn of speed. Here's young Rheneas at lure coursing yesterday at KCC Park (Melbourne). Edited December 9, 2007 by PossumCorner
alanglen
Try lure racing! Not quite lure coursing, it's for little dogs only and they race each other towards their family with a lure line in the middle! Kind of like greyhound racing for the littlies! They love it! Abig more suited to smaller bodies than coursing as the lure goes a straight line. They even have competitions and fun days as well. Shame my big dogs can't play but the little dogs have a fantastic time!
