4ngi3
Hiya, We're looking for a good muzzle for our husky. she's got this little snout and a skinny head and every muzzle we've ever got her, she's been able to take off by herself. We've had some issues with her going after small dogs and we're looking at investing in a great and hopefully comfortable muzzle for her. not too fussed about how much it is as long as it fits, she can't get it off and its relatively comfortable for her to wear. Can anyone recommend a good brand or type? We went to a pet store and they gave us one that was leather and looked like one of those ones that greyhounds wear at the races but instead of the metal "cage" around the mouth, its all leather and she seemed to have some trouble breathing with it on. We have also tried a halti, which was so useless, she just wiggled her head and it was off! We also tried one of the nylon (i think its nylon) and it covers all around her mouth and just leaves a gap at the nose and tip of her mouth, but after a fwe mins in that one, she was out of it. All these wrap around the head and neck. Waht are we doing wrong? or are we using the wrong ones for a sibe?
NorthernStarPits
How is the muzzle you have now secured? does it have the middle strap like this If not that strap may be all that is needed to keep it secure. I have seen alot sold without that strap. ed;SP Edited December 4, 2007 by s~M~s
Kirislin
You can wind the strap once around her collar, she wont get it off then if her collar isn't too loose Linda
petmezz
ok you will need a strap that goes down her nose like the pic above, that appears to be a very good muzzle, also it has to be farly tight when you do it up, other wise she will just pull it over her nose make shour she can pant other wise she will over heat. try looking at for dog trainers they have a good range and are farly cheep. please try to find a trainer who can show you how to place the muzzel on properly. Tahna
Can I ask in what circumstances she is being able to go after small dogs? Siberian Huskys are one breed that shouldn't be let off lead, especially if they are prone to chase small animals which most are. Inside your backyard the fencing should be high enough that she cannot escape, outside the yard she should be on the lead at all times, for her own safely and let alone other small animals. I'm interested in knowing in what circumstances you require her to be wearing a muzzle?
polarpeak
No dog should ever be kept muzzled at all times. I can see from your previous posts that that is your intention. You would be much better off continuing down the path of a trainer than keeping your Siberian muzzled.
huski
What others have said. If she is safely and securely contained to your yard why would you need to muzzle her? Your time and money would be better spent making sure your dog is safely contained rather than buying a muzzle. A muzzle will not stop the dog getting out and it will not stop your dog from getting hit by a car or picked up by the ranger for being loose. ETA: A halti is not similar to a muzzle at all and could do serious damage if you leave it on your dog unsupervised. It will not stop her biting or going after small dogs. Just Midol
How about you build a better fence rather than subject your dog to such cruel conditions 24/7? Or an even better idea, if you can't adequately contain your dog you rehome her? You don't seem to care too much about her wellbeing? If you did you'd improve the fencing. You don't seem to care too much about her wellbeing? If you did you'd improve the fencing. I doubt this dog came from an ethical breeder. With a small muzzle and a skinny head it doesn't sound like a pure bred Husky. I doubt any breeder would want a pup they bred to live in a muzzle. I certainly wouldn't subject my dogs to such inhumane treatment. If she is from a registered breeder then the dog would be better off returned to the breeder. 4ngi3: In what situation is your dog able to go for smaller dogs? Do you not walk her on a lead? If it's because she's escaping from your yard it won't be long before the situation resolves itself in a tragic way. In fact it will also resolve itself if you don't walk her on a lead and you will probably find yourself with a compulsory attendance at Magistrates Court after your local council has dealt with you. If you can't be bothered involving yourself in training your dog then please rehome her to someone who will put the time and effort into making her a good, safe dog. huski
Oh - 4ngi3 - have you heard back from that trainer that was recommended to you in your other thread?
4ngi3
Hi, Thank you to the kind people who have replied with advice on the muzzle. Hi huski - Thanks for asking, I've spoken to Kathy McLeod and she was fantastic. We got some great advice from her and she said that there isn't really much we can do as you can't "train" an instinct out of a dog. So she has given us some tips to manage the situation. She said that these dogs are hunters and they do go for smaller animals like rabbits etc and there are thousands of people who have the same type of dog and every one of them have to manage the situation. so we've put extreme measures into place at home and everyone in the house is aware of the rules and we will need to be hyper vigilant with managing this situation and making sure she can't sneak out the front door again. making sure we know exactly where she is when the front door is to be opened. No excuses with letting a friend in thru the back gate "just this once". Its been great to get some professional advice from Kathy and Im so thankful for the people who have recommended her to me. And to the people who are accusing me of being a cruel owner and whatever, maybe you should read my other post before casting your negative comments! My fence IS high enough and she is ALWAYS walked on a lead, AND I AM taking the responsibility for my dog by getting help from a behaviour specialist, so don't go telling me i "don't care for my dog's well being" or "need to rehome my dog" because you haven't read my other post and you have concluded i'm a bad owner!!! I see you just like to tell everyone they're bad dog owners when they and their dog have gone thru a traumatic experience and are asking for help/advice from other dog owners.. and not your personal comments on what a horrible dog owner they are! I was asking for the muzzle so we can use it when she goes for walks ON HER LEAD! Edited December 16, 2007 by 4ngi3
Poodle wrangler
Good on you for doing the sensible thing and muzzling your dog as a backup measure when out on leash. I asked ages ago about muzzles and the wire or leather cage type ones were suggested as being more comfortable for the dog.
Tonymc
4ng, sadly time and time again it happens on here.People jump in without knowing the facts or reality of the situation and make silly judgements. Many will even read things into a matter that are not there!!!! 4ng,ignore the negative types.I wish you all the best and your certainly going down the right track with the dog.
