laffi
OK I am more confused than ever and want to know which of these would be good for a dog with itchy, dry skin? Could you also explain why? Also which ones can your overdose?
peigirl
Laffi for skin conditions the dermatologists normally recommend EPA & DHA plus GLA - so thats fish or salmon plus evening primrose or borage oil. I'm not familiar with neem oil but 'OD-ing' can occur with cod liver oil due to high vitamin A content.
Tilly
I used an Omega 3, 6 & 9 supplement and occassionally added sardines to their breakfast - that was sufficient to bring out a beautiful healthy coat.

morgan
Neem oil is very good for putting on itchy inflamed skin to soothe it, but I wouldn't be giving it orally. It is usually used for deterring fleas, ticks and other insects. Any oil with omega 3's is good for skin and coat, not to mention heart and brain function - fish oil is the best, but others are good. No Omega 6 supplementation needs to be given if the dog is on commercial food, as there will be too much in the food already. Dry itchy skin is also helped with a zinc tablet each day. White Shepherd mom
Casper used to get terrible allergies, especially at this time of year. Last year I had him on anti-histamines (the ones we take!) because he was so bad. Soon after I also started him on fish-oil capsules...the same ones we take. I have made sure to give him one every day and have found that this year he hardly scratches at all and I have not had to give him anti-histamines since last year. If he does start to get a little itchy, I increase his capsules to two a day for a couple of days and he settles down. It's also good for his joints so I'll be happy to keep him on them. Stitch
I have found Livamol to be absolutely fantastic to improve coat condition. I have a Dobe with skin problems especially in summer and Livamol makes a BIG difference. Boosting the immune system allows the skin to cope with environmental challenges.
