Amerykus
I'm just curious as to how anyone goes about introducing water/milk to a pup for the first time... My guys have just gone 3 weeks old and I'm curious and interested to know what others do with their pups :p any tips or suggestions would be most appreciated P.S they are already eating small amounts of mince meat
persephone
Our pups have access to water 24/7 from around 3 weeks... in a long narrow container, so they cannot step/fall in it. Or a circular cake tin..one with the bit on the middle. We never give any sort of milk...just meaty bones to wean on for a few days, then mince/bones , puppy kibble and water. We also feed out of narrow containers to stop them walking thru the food. Also..as none of our bitches are snappy, we leave dry puppy kibble available 24/7..and they all share. ...no the bitches don't get fat, or pig out our dogs are working Koolies..they tend to be very advanced by 3 weeks, and easily handle gumming bones and drinking water...just a few laps at a time.. Cockerlover
my pups just take to the water when they learn it is there 24/7 FRESH &CLEAN ( about 3-4 weks of age) >I; DO NOT GIVE MILK TO MY PUPS UNLESS OF CORSE IT IS BIOLAC OR ONE OF THE OTHER SUUPP FEEDS as some pups are sometimes lactose intolorant & it will cause them to get the runs. Rysup
As my guys were hand raised, I just started putting their Wombaroo Milk into a bowl, and they very quickly weaned themselves. I just add shallow bowls of milk & water as soon as they can see. I've found Wombaroo to be an excellent milk replacer, and they LOVE it. I know some breeders dont give milk, but I like to! dogsforall
i use a pretty pink double cat bowl with the anti spill edging around it i find it stops them walking through it having the lip around the edge i usually mix farex and wombaroo up them show them the bowl and they soon get the hang off it i just make sure it is really shallow to begin with otherwise the stick their whole face in it and get it up their nose and after they get the hang of it i'll start increasing the amount in the bowl over the next few days so eventually i can leave a full bowl for them some take to it like ducks to water and others need a bit of TLC the get them started good luck dfa
sidoney
Mine just start to drink. I give them water at about the same time as I start to solid feed them. They drink when they want to, and have not needed help to get started. I remember when I was a kid (in the 60s) my mum would start to wean the goldies on farex with powdered milk. We'd dip our fingers, they would start to lick/suck, and then we would lower our fingers to the bowl, and they would start to drink. I've never needed to do that though, with the Vizslas ... maybe we never really needed to do it then, but that was the way that we did it. Here is a piccy of my first waterbowl setup: More pics.
