Here are my plans on what behaviors I want to encourage in the first couple of weeks. I don't want to get into any formal training at this age but obviously it's an important time. Am I missing anything? Suggestions?

Recall - encouraging him every time he comes, playing recall games etc

Attention (name and eye contact)

Crate Training

Gentle (treat in hand method)

Leave

On your Mat

Sit

House Training (duh)

Alone time

Grooming/handling

Moving physically from place to place

Encourage retrieve

Swap items of low value for high value

bite inhibition

loose leash walking

And for socialisation:

Strange surfaces

Agility equipment

Dogs

Old people

Men

Children

Train Station

Cafe

Beach

Cats/Rabbits

car

playground

household items - trashcan, hose, vaccum, umbrellas,

Loud sounds

Vets

steps/stairs

Appreciate any ideas.

Yep I have that covered - my mum works in a nursing home, very handy!

What about dogs - is it best to meet well behaved, calm dogs, or to expose them to nutty ones as well (at a distance, heh) so that they adapt to all kinds?

:coffee: My mum works in a nursing home too, its where alot of the people socialization took place.

I would only allow pup too meet calm dogs that i know first. The OTT ones can wait and only then on lead. Depends on what your pup will be like though, if he is pretty out going then i would let him meet a few active dogs earlier otherwise i would be easing them in slowly for less confident pups.

ETA: Are you getting a blue merle this time? :happydance:

I would not expect too much for the first few weeks as the pup will need time to settle in.

To begin with I would just concentrate on teaching the pup its name, socialisation, lots of play, toilet training and handling and bite inhibition.
