Hi All, Well Cody will be 4 months old on the 22nd and has been a great pup to date all but his toilet training  since day one I take him out after every sleep, every meal, and every hour, and he was coming along nicely, now I've been told by afew poeple (on here) males are better to toilet train than female dogs (Wrong!!!! ) Minx was fully trained by this age and could be trusted, but not Cody, he pee's all the time in the house, I take him out and he goes, I make a super big fuss and then let him back in the house, if he has been outside playing I make him go before I bring him inside to make sure he has been, but once inside he seems to walk away and no one in the family ever see him do it but there is always a wet patch on the carpet  and over the past week and a half, he is peeing inside up to 5 times a night :p (and I dont mean overnight, I mean in the evenings) and its driving me crazy  and what I've had to do now (which I hate with a passion) is chain him to the coffee table in front of us so he cant sneak off to pee, and thats the only time he will cry to go out, so then I tell him he is a good boy, take him out side and again make a big fuss when he goes..... so what am I doing wrong????? as poodle are an smart dog but he is just not getting the idea that outside is where to go???? and sorry to those of you thats going to tell me he is still young.....he is my first male dog and all my past and present female dogs where trained by now and going outside...... I love him to bits but we are spending more and more time frustrated at him and its looking like he will have to be an outside dog and Minx is an indoor dog and would have loved Cody to be aswell, but not going to chain him up with us all the time so we can relax, as the minute he moves we are jumping up to watch him, and its just not enjoyable to have him inside anymore..... PLEASE HELP

You've had him what ..... 8 weeks at the most? We don't know any of your previous training attempts nor how consistent you've been with them from 'day dot'.

Some dogs are more difficult than others - but you do need to be patient. You do need to keep your eye on him. You do need to keep him where you can do that. You could begin to crate train him so that you can use the crate to help in toilet training.

I'd say he's learnt from you that he shouldn't soil inside the house when you are there, but inconsistencies (inadvertent, most likely) have taught him it's ok to soil in the house when you are not there to see. If he's asking to go outside to toilet when he's in your proximity, then I say you're part way there. You just need to be more patient and vigilant to make him so he's more comfortable going outside than inside at all.

Are you picking him up to take him outside, or guiding him out but having him walk on his own four feet? The latter is best. Helps the dog learn to negotiate his own way out.

Hi Erny, I'm a member of the ADT so get most of my advice from there, and has worked well for Minx, but not Cody, yes he walks on his own, and he still pees in the house when I'm there aswell, he just seems to walk away and also right in front of you and pees, he never makes a noise and then you look down and a puddle is sitting right there  and we think, you little bugger all you had to do was cry and we would have taken him right out!! the only time he lets us know is when he cant walk around the room free and is on his lean to the coffee table, but have never had to do that with any other pups so I really hate it but it seems to work????? and might have only had him for afew months but he is haveing to stay outside more nad more and thats not what I want to do, so was hoping for some help?

Sorry Erny forgot to say...yes I have said how about previous traing and how consistent I've been in my first post...... (copy and paste...)

since day one I take him out after every sleep, every meal, and every hour, (still doing this now)

Hope this helps?

...the only time he lets us know is when he cant walk around the room free and is on his lean to the coffee table ...

Then this is perhaps giving you a clue - or at least something to utilise that works and avails to you the opportunity to reward him for desired behaviour. Is he actually crying to be let out to toilet though, or is he crying simply to be let out (perhaps because he doesn't like being chained up)?

... but have never had to do that with any other pups ...

Yeah - they can be such little individuals!

... and might have only had him for afew months

How old was he when you got him?

... was hoping for some help?

That's why I mentioned about crate training. Have a read of the "Red Book" ADT give their new members. There's a section in there on crate training. A search in the "training forum" here (use the DOL search engine) will bring up a good amount of information on crate training. If there's anything you're unsure of in relation to crate training, as a member you are entitled and have access to the ADT trainers who will be able to answer queries.

Have you spoken with the people at ADT about the problems you are experiencing?

If so, what have their suggestions been?

 Perhaps I'm a bit tired and missed that part. Thanks for pointing it out.

How often is he urinating? I'm wondering on the possibility of a bladder infection or some such.

... over the past week and a half, he is peeing inside up to 5 times a night :) (and I dont mean overnight, I mean in the evenings) ...

How long would it be between each 'incident'?

Kyzer took months to toilet train probably 12 - 16 weeks after we got him. We had to keep it consistent, eventually it sank in. It can be frustrating, I sympathise :)

believe it or not, we have our kelpie cross boy trained to kitty litter at the start (ETA in garage not in house BTW!!!) then took it away he is a big boy  no where near the size of a cat. :) bigger than usual totally house trained inside F/T now and we got him as a young 8 month old pup. it took a while so i'd say hang in there they do eventually get it, some take longer than others. i never did let our boy roam free in the house unattended until i was sure he got our training regime down pat - i still check to make sure but haven't found anything for a year or more now. he is so good now. so until then keep a good eye on him until you know the signs that he needs to go potty. sounds like he is doing it behind your back becuase he wreckons it is ok to do that, so hence why you need to maybe yes, keep him around you with a lead. its not so bad with the young ones.

maybe try something that i read earlier, follow him around if he goes to pee, get a whistle and blow that, it will startle him enough to distract his attention then put him outside in the same spot mind you. something extra for your training. but i would definately agree with try tying the puppy to yourself or if not, just keep an eye on him inside.

we have two males that are housetrained. so no, males versus females, males aren't always the dirtiest inside. we believe its the training. and you can train any dog just have to work out the best way for each individual doggy.

goodluck. :)

Thanks Everyone  I was getting so frustrated when I wrote my first post as he was going so good with his toilet training and then over the past weekish he just took a hugh backstep :(

Erny thanks for the advice ;) and I forgot to say..yes he is crate trained aswell, he is not in his crate over night anymore and so far he has no accidents over night :) just in the evenings.

I dont like the idea of of putting him on his chain so he stay with us, but when I say 'chain' its a small light weight chain and its quite long, so he can walk around and still play, but cant go out of our sight, he doesn't cry when I put him on the chain because as I said, its quite long and he can still move around, but every time he does cry I tell him he is a good boy and say the word 'toileys' (which is his word for going) and I take him straight out to the toilet spot (same spot since the very first day) and every time he goes...so I feel he is only crying when on the chain when he needs to go, we have had him for about 10 weeks now.

I sympathise with you Eldoop. We have a 4 month old Chihuahua and find the evenings the hardest time of the day for accidents. We put her out when we get up in the morning and she goes, then she has her brekky and as we have a doggy door we keep watch and she goes out and wees by herself.....BUT, when it comes to evening my husband keeps her on his knee while watching tele. If she gets off and plays with our other Chi she will squat anywhere, only a little bit mind you as she is a Chi (thank heavens).

She goes out before we go to bed and then sleeps through the night. She sleeps with us so we were very anxious at the beginning, but has never done anything in the bed.

We keep her confined to the laundry, kitchen/dining area during the day as there is no carpet on the floor.

I consider we are half way successful with her training and we have only had her for 3 1/2 weeks.

It has been raining overnight and this morning and neither of them will go out on the grass to go.

I understand this is a common problem though with a lot of dogs.

Hi Moggy  I know what you mean about not wanting to go in the rain, I stood outside last night in the rain with Cody to go before bed (our dogs sleep in our bedroom aswell) and I knew he would need to go as its had been about an hour and a half since he last went, and he'd been asleep at my feet, so I know he hadn't gone in the house somewhere, and I stood outside for over an hour  my hubby came outside and said he couldn't believe I was still out there!!!! but Cody the little bugger must have hung on until he was busting and pee'd for a good few minutes and I thought to my self lucky I didn't give in and I almost did afew times as he would have just gone inside  so I'm trying to get through his head that once he goes its back inside so hopefully he will learn to go straight away

My pup's about 16 weeks and he seems to just be coming around now. He was really good at first then hit a bit of a road block and started peeing inside more (lucky we have tiles). We were yelling at him and taking him straight out if we caught him going in the house, doing nothing if we found a puddle later and praising him like crazy whenever he went outside. It took him a while but he must have realised that it makes us happy when he goes outside and he's become a lot more consistent. He did pee on the clean doona yesterday....but apart from that he's been really good. It's all about patience.

Moggy

im sorry i heard "chihuahua". lol

my chis are exactly the same you know, they will not go outside when it is raining. hold it until they get inside. i have kitty litter inside for mine. as im not around f/t as i work. mostly they will all go on the kitty litter but it took a fair while to train them all to do it on there.

then the youngest the other day, i give him a bone (12 months old) and he is good he will no. 1's and 2's on the litter no worries but he gets the bone and puts it on the toilet the dag. he couldn't understand why i was unhappy about that. apart from saying eeewwwwwwww he is so cheeky, but i let him run around the house and he does nothing now, he knows he can't pee. and the bedding is clean as well now.

Eldoop i sympathise with you! Speaking from my personal experiences only, I have found bitches easier to train than dogs... my youngest boy would have to have been the worst and we went weeks where we would be doing everything "right" but he would still go so we started getting very serious - taking him out as often as he was going (if he went every 20 mins we would take him every 15)... one day he just clicked and he has been fantastic ever since.

The only thing i find easier with boys is that it doesn't seem to take as much convincing that they need to go!!

It will get easier - hang in there!! You seem to be doing an excellent job so far - consistency is the key... it will click!!!

Hi all, I too have a toileting problem with my Yorkie. She is stricktly an indoor dog & has been "trained" to use the "pee pads". I have had her for 6 1/2 months & she has good days & bad. She comes to work with me every day & pees on her mat, but poops on the floor next to the mat. She sleeps in the bathroom & usually uses the pad to pee on, but poops next to the pad on the floor. Some mornings when I let her out of the bathroom, she runs through the house & pees & poops wherever she pleases. I have tried picking her up when I see her about to poop & put her on the mat, but she then refuses to go & holds on for hours. I tried confining her to a small pen where the pad took up 2/3 of the pen, but she only used the pad occassionally & still messed on the floor. I praise her when she uses the mat & even give her a treat. When she makes a mess in the house, I tell her she is naughty & put her in the pen or the bathroom. Is this what I should be doing? I'm open to any suggestions.

I'll admit to not ever having used the toilet mats to teach house-training, so I'm not sure how large they are. But have you tried using two mats? I've often observed that dogs urinate and defacate in different spots.
