This may seem like a silly question, but my dog is a rescue dog, I was lead to beleive when i got her that she was bull mastif x rotti. Both my husband and my first vet noticed cattle markings. A different vet today said that he would guess that she is mainly a red cattle. I have just been looking at dog breeds and can find Australian stumpy cattle dog - is that the same. I am trying to find out information on my breed of dog so I can get a better idea of how to work with her.

In my younger years, the dogs were 'known' as "Red Heelers" (or "Blue Heelers", as the case may be). I was given to understand there were general behaviour/temperament differences between the two as well. Would those who are in more contact with them (and therefore more 'knowing' of them) than I agree with this? Generally speaking, that is.

Hi there,

there is the Australian Cattle Dog, also known as red heeler, blue heeler, queensland heeler or ACD. Then there is a different breed called the Australian stumpy tailed cattle dogs. They are red speclkled or blue speckled with black markings on the head. Considered different breeds but look very similar to the untrained eye!!!

Sorry but more questions, I have just had a look at the profile on the dog breed section for Australian Cattle dog, Holly is generally solid tan, with some cattle markings on feet (what I think they look like), smooth coat - not rough or corse, plus she has big floppy ears and a black section running down her back and along her tail. I wish I could post a picture of her so we could play guess the breed but I havn't managed to compress my photo small enough to attach it.

Perhaps up-load the pics to photobucket.com and then you just paste the links into your post?

What colour are the markings you are referring to?

On her chest white with red speckles, on her feet towards toes white with red looking speckles. Along her back and tail in almost a strip black marking. Started out on her tail as a black dot but then the dot has turned to almost a black strip on her tail.

I would suggest uploading the photo's, the red merle on the legs isn't always cattle dog and the black strip on the back doesn't fit well. Cattle dogs are great fun and wonderful dogs, I was proudly owned by them for most of my childhood!!

Dear Erny,

There is NO difference between the Red and Blue Cattle Dog, in either temperament or their behaviour. Both colours can be very well behaved with good temperaments, or, badly behaved with shocking temperaments ;) . A lot depends on the experience of the breeder of the litter, (in regards to the correct socialisation of the pups, the temperament of both parents etc, etc, etc), along with the new owners ability to correctly and consistently train the pup, the underlying temperament of the pup etc, etc, etc. They are a very strong willed breed, fiercely loyal to their "flock", suspicious of strangers, and very aloof. They can be a joy to live with or, a huge nightmare, depending on their upbringing. We have been involved in the breed since 1989, breeding very rarely, for our needs only.

It would be like saying that chocolate Labs are more energetic than the blacks, or that smooth Collies are more intelligent than the Roughs (sheesh, I hope thats not true!!!!) ;) ;)

Having said all this, there is plenty of older farmers that will swear black and blue, that one is better than the other colour, but I think its fair to say, these comments are not based on fact, only observation, or long standing gossip :):( .

It's like saying that chestnut horses are more flighty.

chloebear, I think you've had enough people in other threads letting you know that your dog doesn't look like it has any cattle dog. Instead of trying to categorise her and maybe try to make her into what she is not, why not work with what you have? You can see or work out how focused or energetic or prey driven or pack driven and so on she is without knowing a breed category.

I have come to the conclusion that there are more myths about cattle dogs than any other breed I know!!

Jed,

I couldnt agree with you more :) .

Perhaps we could set up a new Discussion Forum....................."Myths and Furfies" :( .

Im thinking it could possibly be overrun with Cattle Dog Furfies, but Im sure there would be other breeds that could contribute though :) .

Sidoney,

You mean to say that is only a myth about the Chestnuts.......................... :( .
