Animal House
Sounds like he is getting used to it, so get those puppy pads and keep up the consistency. Praise when he does good, but never punish him for accidents. If you want to get him used to outside and noises (but hes not safe on the ground until 2 weeks after his vaccinations are complete) then you can carry him around. I did this with my staffy, and she was a lot heavier than a cavy I used to carry her in my arms around the outside of the shopping centre, near the main road, to the train station, (all to expose her to the noises and sights she would have to get used to). You can also start to lead train him when hes at home in the apartment too, just a few minutes a day to get used to it. ;) We need some pictures of the little one soon, so we know what he looks like. coco22
obi's not very consistent with peeing on the newspaper. we did give him a lot of praise and treats when he does do it. i think he has more misses. but occasionally he does run straight into the laundry room and pee by himself without us prompting him. so we are very encouraged by that :D currently he refuse to poo on the newspaper. i will guide him into the laundry room on the newspaper but he just wouldn't do it. he would then run out and sniff around the carpet and do it there. we wonder if we should use the same method to train him to poo on the newspaper? or maybe we should get a small patch of fake turf. we are waiting for him to get his 2nd vaccination then we can then take him out for walks and to do his pee and poo outside instead. he's starting puppy preschool tomorrow and we have 1 private lesson tomorrow before he joins the group next week, so i am really looking forward to it. i have attached a few photos of obi here but can someone teach me how do i use obi's photo as my avatar? thanks
paulnkat
We have enrolled him for puppy preschool which will start next sat. But from now until then, we hope to get some advise from here. Thanks. If he is only 8 weeks old, he wouldn't have had all his vaccinations, are you sure that it is safe for him to attend puppy preschool? I've always waited until the final vaccination before I attend puppy preschool, but please anyone correct me if I’m wrong.... Congratulations with the perseverance with house training! Congratulations with the perseverance with house training! obi has just turned 9 weeks. most puppy preschool start at 8 weeks. the trainer said that as long as obi has his 1st vaccination, it's alright. he said that the best time to socialise pups are between 8-12 weeks. Animal House
Congrats on Obi coming along so well for such a young little fella. He will still have accidents for quite some time though, a bit like toddlers when they are being toilet trained. :D I would say get some fake turf if he doesnt like to poop on the newspaper, as the carpet probably feels more like grass to him. Also, where he has pooped on the carpet, make sure you clean it so he cant smell where he has done it before, I think Biozet is very good for getting smells (urine etc) out of carpets. Is puppy school at the vets?
coco22
yes puppy school is at the vet's. i bought some training pads for obi yesterday. i laid it at the same place where i laid the newspaper. instead of peeing on it, he slept on it! later that day he did pee on the training pad twice. but sometimes he seems to be in a destructive mode and seek to shred the training pad. and when i tell him firmly 'no' he tried to bite me. Animal House
Sounds like typical puppy behaviour, they have teeth and a great need to chew everything. Next time he does it, give him a toy he is allowed to chew (a puppy kong is great)

Eileen
We found a kong was too heavy to be a good toy for Dolly when she was 8 weeks old. We had greater success with stuffed toys. Re puppy preschool, as all the other pups have had the same level of vaccination, it is apparently ok. I was worried too, but was reassured by the vet. Enjoy puppy preschool, it is really fun! Bulldust
I would invest in one of those inside doggie-loo's and try train him onto that, if he's toilet trained inside on paper how will he learn to hang on until you take him 3 stories down to some grass?? i dont think it would be very pleasant having an adult doing his buisness in the laundry every day or having to run him downstairs every few hours 24/7 These indoor doggie toilets are about $300, i think one would be a good idea though ive never had one maybe someone on here has. He is absolutely adorable by the way!! Edited November 26, 2007 by Bulldust
