Woofyhugger
Hey Everyone. My 3 month old boxer pup doesn't like having his lead put on. He ready to start going for walks around the neighbourhood and parks, but trying to connect the lead to his collar is a nightmare. I call him to me, he comes, he sits.. but as soon as I go to connect the lead to his collar he bounces around (not in a oh great we're going walkies way..) but in a oh sugar.. I don't want him to put that on me way. He also does the same with his collar. He is great once his collar is on, he doesnt scratch it, or try and get it off, but he just doesnt like me putting it on him. Needless to say, he is not making it easy for me to walk him. When I do finally get both on, he bounces and jerks and pulls as if he is trying to get off them.. even if I try and use his favourite treats to get him to behave. Any suggestions? My previous boxer was an angel and loved her collar and I even trained her to get her lead when I said "get your lead". The same training just isnt working on my little fellow. Any advice? Thanks in advance, Matt and naughty Boston.
First Time Puppy Owner
Hi here is an exert from this web site - hope it helps! http://www.iams.com/en_BI/jhtmls/nutrition...=PN&qi=2445 Five Easy Steps to Leash Train Your Dog Begin by placing the collar and lead on your dog while she eats, letting the lead hang loosely by her side. This allows your dog to associate the lead with something pleasant (food) and helps her get used to having a collar around her neck. After two or three days, take the lead in your hand and follow her around the house for a few minutes after she's eaten. Do this for longer and longer periods, until your dog is used to both the lead and having you walk beside her. Next, go outside and let your dog drag the lead around, occasionally picking up the lead and following her. Offer her a treat while showing the lead. While walking, hold the lead in your right hand and coax your dog along your left side by holding a treat in your left hand. As you walk, repeat the phrase, "Let's go!" Praise your dog when she does well. If your dog starts to pull forward, do a clockwise turn and walk in another direction; the lead will pull her head to the side so she'll have to hurry to catch up with you. Repeat this exercise until your dog learns that if she wants to walk beside you and receive your praise, she'll have to stay by your side.
R00
You also need to keep in mind ,your dog doesn't get a choice. Don't muck around too much, just be firm and straight to the point , hold him, stick the lead on and go walking. you are the boss. ( this doesn't mean be mean to the dog) Edited November 17, 2007 by Roo
persephone
Hi.. Maybe you need to back to basics for a while... NO food/treats, except when the collar/lead is on So.. you have a hungry pup,a collar and lead. Call pup..he knows you have food, should be easy. he sits, you show him the collar..he takes off. Ok..no food...,no speaking, just get up, move away, and you wait 10 minutes ago, then try again... don't play his 'game' of 'chasey' When he is sitting and happy for you to show him the collar, he gets a treat. repeat until he doesn't worry. Next step...you progress to slipping the collar (with lead attached)over his head (have it done up, but very large, so this can be done easily. He will be very keen to get his food..something yummy..so shouldn't worry. Immediately iit's on..food time!! just let lead hang loose. Next step...put collar/lead on , and pick up lead, give him a treat, and go for a little walk... etc. he needs to learn that there is no choice. He accepts the collar/lead unit, or he is a bit hungry ;) Just my idea.... may not be your style, and that's fine . best of luck with him. he is very cute!!
