alexie
I brought my puppy home yesterday, he is 8 weeks old and a Japanese Spitz. When I brought him home he passed a firm normal looking poo. I gave him some puppy milk and dried biscuits, which he had had before. Since then he has had the runs. This morning he also vomited so I took him to the vet who said he had an inflamed bowl most likely from the stress of leaving his mum and that puppy milk is the worst think I could of given him. He also told me to give him only water and a water and glucose mix (5mill every 4 hours) for the next 24 hours (until Tuesday PM) and then I have to give him a chicken, rice, bran and potato stew for a minimum of 7 days. Since then he has only had the runs twice once at mid day and once at 5 pm. The vet tried to make it seem like that is all I could feed him for ever and that I wouldn’t be able to move him on to dry food and that anything else would be really bad for him, like he was trying to scare me away from even giving him normal dry food. I don’t want to hurt my puppy and want what is best for him. Does anyone have any advice? And if his tummy is sensitive how can I give him heartworm tablets and things like that he needs? Also he told me I couldn’t use any products like advantage until the puppy is 12 weeks old. Is this true?
Rysup
Most flea treatments are 12 weeks plus yes, there are a few you can use younger, but not many. Once your puppy has settled in, you can wean him onto the food you want. Dont let the vet scare you. We brought a new puppy home last weekend, and he got the runs for a few days, but he settled down and is fine now. The only think I did was stop any milk. I kept up the dry food, as that was what he was used to. It may just be the stress of all the change - I had a dog once who would get the runs at every single show we went to. For his first year of life. Go to the show, runny poo all over his trousers. Without fail. I got very good at washing his bum before we went in the ring!! He did out grow it eventually. Pug Hugger
Dont worry! I had to fast Louie for 24 hours within 3 days of brining him home (he had the runs too) I gave him rice and chicken for the next 2 days then slowly introduced his kibble back into his food (i.e. 3 parts chicken rice, 1 pt kible, then half and half and so on)
alexie
Thankyou both. That makes me feel better, I was so worried about the poor little thing.
Pug Hugger
Thankyou both. That makes me feel better, I was so worried about the poor little thing. Of course if it gets worse take him back -especially if you think he is dehydrated. I gave LOuie ice cubes so he did not get dehydrated
Mystiqview
Just keep his fluids up. Why the vet has given you the most blandest of bland diets is anything ritcher will most likely upset his stomach again and start the whole process over again. Puppies are as good as babies.. everything goes in the mouth.. aside from the stress of moving into a new home. Normally for the runs, you starve puppy for 24 hours then give them some very dry mixture, similar to what the vet described and not a lot of it as a lot of food after vomiting etc can cause it to happen again. There are products you can get to bind up the runs, but I will not mention them. Best to ask the vet.
percyk
Doesn' t it ever freak you out! You always think the worst. However, like everyone says here -it's normal for them to be stressed when they move to their new home! Diarrhoea is just a way for the body to rid itself of something and if it's new food or just nerves, they will eventually settle. Only give small quantities of food once hes on the mend - the stomach will be still sensitive for a while after a spate of diarrhoea.
kim21
My pup had it too although his was a bacteria infection in his tummy from a bad batch of meat from dodgy petshop, chicken and rice was all he ate for about 3weeks, then I got sick of making it for him and now he is on a fairly normal diet. Although I havta say that any little thing will set him off with the runs again, different food, etc and ssometimes I dont even know why. Often I think he gets it when he is out (dog school, walks) because he is excited. Other than that he is healthy and the vet isn't worried. Make sure you worm him because a worm infestation can cause the runs too. Kim21
Caesars mum
Also he told me I couldn’t use any products like advantage until the puppy is 12 weeks old. Is this true? my vet treated my 9 week old puppy with frontline spray as we are having a bad time with fleas at the moment and he said it is safe for puppies from 2 days old. the only reason that flea products are all classified as 12 weeks and up these days is because they are not allowed to trail the products on pups under that age. but frontline spray has been around prior to these rules apparently according to my vet and is deemed safe. this is my vets advise so no flaming just passing on information and the fact that Nala has had no adverse reaction from the frontline except that the flea problem has improved. Cockerlover
I always advise my puppy buyers to buy some yogurt with aphidoficus(probally spelt wrong)because it is quite normal for a pup to get stressed when going to a new home; add i tspn to his food (BLAND for a few days)then return to kibble he was raised on ;your breeder should have informed you of what hes been raised on ;do not change his diet ;as this can also cause the runs;if the vomiting continues seek vetenary advise ; but if hes not letharic & is drinking plenty ;dont worry ;hell settle soon; good luck.
