sidoney
You would think that a vet would spot a cleft ... it does sound like something is going on there ... What about a bit of mince? Less liquid?
Rysup
I have always been under the impression a cleft baby feeding exclusively on the mother would have died before 3 weeks, because without sealed suction, milk normally does not come out of the bitch. Put your finger in his mouth, nail down, and see if he gets strong suction. Edited November 9, 2007 by Rysup
sidoney
That's what I thought Rysup - we had a cleft baby when I was a kid, and my parents showed and bred Goldies, and it didn't live long. Unless there is a wee little thing wrong there? Milk can come out of the mother, when she lets down - we have milk dripped around the place here at times. Although it could not be efficient. Rysup
Having breastfed myself, I can attest to it coming out all on its own LOL But yes I would think that they would not get enough, especially once the initial engorgement had been relieved. They would not get that nice rich hind milk, and would fall behind very quickly. My litter (5 weeks now) gained no weight for 10 days and the first thing the vet did was check for clefts.
