Asalei Posted November 6, 2007 Share Posted November 6, 2007 Leia has just come inside making chewing motions with her mouth. There's nothing in her mouth and she's pawing at it like she's trying to remove something and she's scratching. OH and I have both tried to have a look in her mouth and there doesn't seem to be anything obvious.. We can't see her tongue properly because she keeps withdrawing it into her mouth. I've started to feed her ice, to try and numb or help any pain she's got in her mouth. I'm wondering whether she might have been bitten by an ant or something outside? She's had her chicken bone tonight, but we can't see any bones or anything stuck in her mouth. Doesn't seem to be swelling either. Does this just sound like she's been stung by something and it's irritated? Should I keep feeding her ice? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Echo Posted November 6, 2007 Share Posted November 6, 2007 (edited) Hi Erin, she could have a piece of bone (or stick) lodged between her teeth, across the upper jaw. This is quite common, so I would be having a good look up there. Sometimes it is hard to see, but persist until you get a good , clear look. I hope you find the cause of her discomfort. Good luck. Asalei Posted November 6, 2007 Author Share Posted November 6, 2007 I thought of a toad because we have a lot around here, but normally they just bark at them and not attack them. It's only the right side of her mouth, so I don't think it is that because otherwise she would be irritated on both sides. She's moved away from me now and is still doing the chewing mothing, but not as much as she was before. If she's still doing it in the morning, I'll take her to the vet. catzatsea Posted November 7, 2007 Share Posted November 7, 2007 (edited) How did it go at the vets? Spud does this especially if he has been using his mouth to scratch his itchies. Check the upper gums for hairs, I moisten my fingers with water then scrape around on his upper gums. If this doesnt solve it as he gets a little obsessive (to the point of cutting his upper lips) I wipe his gums over with bonjela (teething gel) and that seems to do the trick. Asalei Posted November 7, 2007 Author Share Posted November 7, 2007 (edited) Well, after having to be sedated (poor thing is frightened of the vet), we got to open her mouth right up and there was the culprit! A chicken bone stuck length ways on her bottom rear right gum. It was about an inch long and left her gum bleeding, so it was imbedded very well! OH kept telling me I was stupid to be taking her to the vet, but I just had a feeling something was wrong. Showed him, mummy knows best right? ;) She's now sleeping off her tranquiliser and there's no dinner tonight. Vet suggested to stop giving them the chicken bones, but I'm not sure. I think she just had to be really un lucky for it to have gone over the top of her teeth/gum to sit parallel to her gum. We'll see. The vet said that he expects her to be fine in an hour, but she's still sound asleep on the lounge and when we've tried to stand her up, she looses her footing.. The same thing happened to my cat many years ago - on Christmas day (of course, cat's just love you having to pay $$$$ for the Emergency Vet). She stole a chicken bone out of someone's bin. Vet told me I shouldn't give her cooked bones. Duh, I didn't GIVE it to her! Asalei Posted November 7, 2007 Author Share Posted November 7, 2007 LOL norti kitty! The vet commented to say that they shouldn't be given cooked bones, I said they aren't, it was a raw bone. She's slept all night on the lounge all night after peeing in their bed. Sally was cracking a narna at 1am this morning and I got up to see what was wrong. She couldn't find anywhere cumfy to sleep because their bed was wet and Leia had stolen the other bed. I let them in onto the lounge where they could both fit and go to sleep (so I could go to sleep). She's wagged her tail this morning when I got up and said good morning, but she's still snoozing on the lounge. I'm actually starting to wonder if that bone had been there a while because she's been a bit funny with eating things (like she's got tender teeth) for a few weeks now. She only started the mouthing and pawing Tuesday night, so I'm wondering if the bone was pushed into her gum which made it hurt. I think that woke her up a bit because she came back in and started playing a little bit with Sally. Now they've both walked outside.
