Clear Dog Training - Brisbane

Recommended Posts

We are thinking of taking our dog there for their puppy consolidation classes and would like to hear some reviews/comments.

I spoke to the man who runs it (Oliver) last week and he sounds like a fairly knowledgeable man who knew what he was doing. Didn't have good things to say about Bonnie's though (which is where we took our pup for puppy school)

Thanks in advance

We just paid $200 for a consult for agression problems, but we weren't happy.I wrote them an email to ask for a refund, which they will give, hoewver Val wants to come out first, and she said I'm the first unhappy customer in 30yrs ! Perhaps other people aren't telling them they're not happy - or she's just saying that.

Can i ask what you didn't like about it ? We thought about joining them actually !

funny that's what he 'strongly recommended' to me, saying that since we didnt do the first puppy school with them that we should have a private session before we began

Wow. That sounds a bit ridiculous? Why would you need a private session if you just want to do some basic obedience training? Wonder if it has anything to do with it costing $200.

At least you're getting your money back. I should've asked for a refund from a few trainers. I'm still waiting on my report ( through email )from The Pawman, from 2 1/2 weeks ago.

Oh really....

we were looking at using the Pawman - what did you think ??

My bestfriend used him for probs with her dog, and can't rave about him enough.

i've written him an email to see when he is free, as I still haven't heard back from jane.

I think Jane is away or has been having issues with her email/internet (again) as I emailed her a few days ago and haven't heard back. She is normally very quick to reply, I am sure she will get back to you ASAP.

Thanks Husky.

I think i must have been unlucky, as both times I've written to her, its taken a few days to reply. Damn internet problems !!

Did you try anyone else? How long until your problem was fixed ? Did you notice a change in your dog straight away ?

Taking a few days to reply is not unusual, Jane does have a job etc :) I know in the past when Jane has taken a while to reply to me it has been because she has had internet issues I don't know if this is the case now

I didn't try anyone else, I didn't want to waste my time so I contacted Steve from K9 Force and got him to recommend me someone. I trust Steve and I knew he would point me in the right direction

I don't believe there is a 100% cure for aggression but it can be managed. With aggressive dogs you need to acknowledge their limits and what they can and cannot do. The progress you see in your dog and any changes made are entirely up to you (when you have had the right advice) and how much time and effort you commit to training - and how well you follow the advice that has been given to you.

I noticed small changes in my dog quite quickly.

I got him out because he has 30 years experience and state's aggression and dominant behaviour is his specialty. In my case he came out and assessed my dog and told me he was unsuitable for domestic, for reasons which he explained to me. So that's as far as the consultation got. He was prompt getting back to me through email and arrived early on the day, however i'm still waitng on the written report ( to be emailed ) i was promised........If not the Pawman, maybe try Jane Harper, some people here have had proven success with her.

kathyinjapan, are you just looking to do some basic obedience with your dog? If your on the southside I would probably recommend southside dog obedience club or Bonney's runs classes at Durack and also further south I think in Mt Gravatt and Logan (check their website). I think asking you to do a private consult before starting up some basic obedience classes sounds a little suspicious!

We did puppy school for a few weeks with Bonnie's and felt they were only just so-so. The lady was a bit condescending (towards not just us but others in the class too) and there was no structure to the class which I didn't like.

That's why I'm iffy about continuing with them..

I'll have a look into Southside though, thanks

Fair enough, I did puppy school with them last year but found it to be pretty good. There wasn't much structure to the class then either, it was more just some free time for the puppy's to learn to play together and a small about of obedience training etc... I quite liked the way the class was run. It was a guy who ran our class so I don't know, things might have changed! I've heard good things about southside but I'm not entirely sure about what classes and stuff they run! Either way good luck with finding a club ;)

Kathyinjapan,

The puppy classes at Bonnies never really have been structured in the way of really formal training. The first part of the class has always been puppy play. Some of those puppies have come from pet shops or other places where the puppies may not have had suitable early puppy socialisation. At 8 weeks of age, you really do not want to bombard puppies with heaps and heaps of lead training. So socialisation at that part is very much necessary.

Is it basic obedience you want or specialised program for something or another? If it is only basic obedience, you should not need a consult before starting training.

C&Z

As Husky has said, when you have behavioural issues, it is as much dependant on the dog itself and what it is being treated for, and how much time and effort the owners REALLY put in. The owners of the dog may be putting in 100% effort, but may not be doing it how they were told to do it so it is not as effective. Also many dog owners who have issues with their dogs, want a quick fix. Unfortunately for most of the behavioural issues, there is no quick fix as I am sure you are aware. Depending on behavioural problem is being treated, it can take years before it has been worked out.

Some times a problem needs to be broken down and dealt with as separate issues. How you treat it in one environment may not be the way you would treat it in another environment. Before going from one trainer to another, I would be giving one method fair go. If it is not improving anything at all, if everything they have said has been tried, or something is drastic and does not make sense, then certainly seek a second opinion.
