Tapferhund
Depends. What are the parents/grandparents like...do they have weak pasterns? If not then it is more than likely nutritional. Maybe you should talk to your Vet or get a referral to a specialist . Edited November 4, 2007 by Tapferhund

Scales of Justice
May be genetic but may also be imbalance to calcium:phosphorus. Make sure you have the pup/dog on a balanced diet.

Chocolate
By 9 months of age there would be little that could be done if the weak pasterns have been caused by nutritional deficiences during puppy growth period. Of course it could be a structural weakness in which case nothing can be done. The only thing I would suggest to try to see if there is any improvement dietary wise is to give vitamin C and a natural calcium sup like cottage cheese, yoghurt. Chocolate
Sorry re your orginal post weak pasterns can be from both nutrition in puppyhood and structural faults. If you lift the front of your sheltie up do the pasterns fall straight down as a continuation of the leg? If they look weak with no pressure on them they are certainly structurally weak. roughcoat
He's 9 months old...... He's on Chicken Wings/ Necks/ Frames/ Pro Plan/ Chicken Mince/Fish Oil Capsules / Carrots / Apples/ anything else you could suggest for him? If you are feeding Pro Plan you do not need to add all the rest as this is messing up the balance
