Has Anyone Had Soft Pallete Operation Done?

I have a bulldog and think she will need to have her soft pallete cut.The vet said this could be why she is congested all the time and said there is a chance that she might not make it out as the throat can swell and this can choke them.Just wanting to know if anyone else has had this done.

Brandy is too young to be thinking about having her "throat" done. The most obvious sign they need the op is when they faint or overproduce phlegm. Another sign is the horrible noise they make when panting.

brandy is not being done yet.

However I have seen 2 vets and it will need to be done when she is around 9-10 months old.

she is phlemy and cant get it up.

We have her on some medicine and this is what we will stick to until she gets older.

It is very common in brachy breeds. The simplest way to diagnose is to have the Vet look down her throat. He may need to put her under an aneasthetic to do this. Phlegm is caused by an infection on the lungs and has nothing to do with an elongated palate, although you may be describing the choking gagging sound that they make when they have this condition.

Goose honking, laboured breathing and tiring quickly, problems with keeping cool in warmer weather, heavier breathing then normal when exercising and snoring are all signs on what is termed as brachycephalic syndrome, of which and elongated palate is one of the problems of this syndrome. Other issues that could be affecting your dog are everted laryngeal saccules, stenotic nares and a collapsing trachea.

Any dog that suffers this condition is at risk of early death, heat stroke and a collapsed trachea if not corrected. Obviously this all depends on the severity of the condition. There is risk with any surgery and this surgery is not any different. Many dogs undergo the surgery without any problems and there are members here who have had dogs undergo this surgery and have reported fantastic results back. It is expensive though.

I would get the opinion of a vet specialist as this is a very complicated and delicate operation, your vet can refer you to whoever is local. I have known several bulldogs to have this done but they have been older than 9 months, but apparently it can give years to the life of badly affected dogs if done early enough to avoid larryngeal (sp) collapse.

Talk to as many British Bulldog breeders as you can at shows etc about this as they are quite knowledgable and can offer their advice and/or experience, but I would definitely not be making any decisions without the advice of a veterinary specialist surgeon.

Good luck with your pup hopefully this is a last resort for her.

The vet I seen second was a specialtist and he would be performing the operation with another vet.She has alot of trouble with the heat and the worrying things is its not realt that hot yet.She snore something shocking[which I know bulldogs snore] but she only sleeps for 5 minutes at a time then she wakes and then sleeps and this goes on all night.Of a day she sleeps much better and has to make up for the lost sleep from the night before.We have a park just at our corner,we are about 6 houses away and she struggles to get her breathe when just going that far.The vet had a quick look at her nostrils and he said they were realy good size so thinks there is no problem there.

When she gets to 8 months he wants to put her under and check her throat.He said the worse she gets the sooner than later it MAY have to be.

I honestly hate waking of a night to my poor baby trying to get some sleep over her breathing and extremely load snoring.

I was interested in prices aswell to let me know when to start saving.LOL.

I was just wondering with the "goose honking" How bad does it have to be before you would consider it a problem?

Since we have had Snot he has done this maybe a dozen times in the 8 months we have had him?

It's quite distressing to watch, as he is really uncomfortable and it's as though he can't breath when doing it - but usually only lasts for about 10-20 seconds and other than that we haven't had any health issues, he does snore but I wouldn't call it extreme. I'm concerned about the heat as well. This will be his first summer and already he's struggling with it. Although we never take him out during a hot day, When we go for a walk the route we take is max 20-30 minutes which is the most he can handle, half of that if it's warmer..

Sometimes when we go to the dog park he doesn't know his limits and even after 15 minutes he skulls so much water he power chucks it straight back up..

Should I be worried about any of this, or is it basically normal apart from the "goose honking" Obviously if he was doing it often I would be straight to the vet but he has been really good lately and I haven't seem him do it in weeks.

I recently had a quote from a specialist in Sydney to do the palate, nasal passages and saccules for $2100... but I have since negotiated a deal elsewhere for $800.

It wont be cheap.

Goosehonking can be seen in many dogs, in particular toys and brachy breeds.

The only conclusive way of determining how much of a problem it is is to have the Vet check it out.

I know it might be a bit of a drive for you but try the RSPCA Yagoona. Chris (Vet) has done quite a few palate surgeries. She is doing the Pug I spoke of above that needs the palate, nose and saccules done for a 1/3 of what I was quoted elsewhere.

If she is Phlegmy a squirt of lemon juice into her mouth may help to break it up (she wont thank you for it though), it is by no mean's a cure, but may make her a little more comfortable for the time being.

Do you know why the vet wishes to wait till she is 8 month's old to check her throat ? Not the surgery, just to have a look around and see what is going on ?

I think the vet would probably do a check before 8 months old thats just when i thought i would have it checked as the syptoms he talked about and a few from on here are what she has.

Yagoona is near Bankstown in Sydney (south west burbs). They are only in for the day. Prividing everything goes well you would drop her off that morning and collect that night.

My female pug Nikki suffers from reverse sneezing alot but I have been told that it is nothing to worry about, just comfort her and try not to get excited about it. I hope I have been given the correct information??????

If you were told be a Vet after your dog had been assessed, then yes, I would say you were given correct information. ;)

Not all dogs that reverse sneeze have problems with breathing. If you are concerned then I would recommend have the palate looked at by your vet.

Thank's for the reply puggle's. I had never heard of goose honking, but the reverse sneeze I am familiar with.

Like you Pugzville my pug does it on the rare occasion, only 15 time's in 6 years roughly. But like you scared the crap out of me !!! Straight to the vet and was told the same as you, nothing to worry about. I did a heap of research after that and it is quite common even in non - brachy breed's. There are even a few thread's on DOL about it !!

Our dog Toby has the soft pallete operation done if I'm remembering correctly.. Unfortunately it didn't help him I think he has alot of other problems as well which weren't fixed by the operation.
