Mobile Groomers

so this is a question for mobile groomers or groomers that groom from home.

If someone came to your door on a sunday asking you if you would groom their dog would you be offended? what about if the say game round after 6pm after they have seen you drive home?

one of our neighbours that lives up the back here is doing this to me and i refuse to do her dog because ONE i dont work AT ALL sundays, i wont even do my own dogs on a sunday why would i do hers and two i dont want to come home after a long hard day and groom another dog unless of course she makes an apointment!!!

she didnt take it well either when i told her i couldnt help, her response "oh well your not busy are you?" no i wasnt but its beside the point and im sick of explaining to her that if she wants the dog done she needs to book an apointment...is it really that hard? :thumbsup: :rolleyes:

I have had a couple of people do this. One person accross the road knocks on my door all the time, but they at least make an appointment now.

I have had people on a Sunday, or late an night knock but I just tell them I dont work x and x days, and if they would like it I can book them in in the next couple of weeks. Some will say "oh, you cant do it now" and I just say no, or "oh, you dont work Sunday" and I say do you ?

Also say, yes I am very busy and thats why I need a day off !!!!

I'm not rude but I dont care if they're offended, cos they're rude for knocking on my door and asking me to do it now when everyone else can pick up the phone and make an appointment.

I get people knocking on my door to make appointments. At first I thought it odd but this area has the same community feel as the country - 'pop by anytime' .... it doesn't bother me at all. What does bother tho' :thumbsup: is owners pressuring me to do their dog on my day off.

You know the whole Cmon she's only small

Or, I'll Mind your daughter while you do the dog

etc... I flat out refuse.

Our next door neighbour is an electrician and I ask them to do jobs for us. I knock on the door (at reasonable hours) but only to make an appointment.

I think you should just say that you work by appointment only and never groom Sundays, evenings, whenever you don't want to do their dog.

Does she expect "mates rates", too :thumbsup: ?

It's not as if someone gets a "grooming emergency" :rolleyes:

I think you can firmly say, "No", without being rude. If you don't, you'll only encourage them to do it again.

I don't think people realise how much work is involved in grooming! I only do my 2 poodles (imperfectly) and that's enough for me!

Yes I get this all the time, for years & years now...........

Being in a small Village it is really hard, as I might be in one of the shops after hours, and I get people see me so decide they might get their dog done. I dont have my appointment book strapped to my body, so how would i know if I can or cant do the dog & when at what time etc when I am in the middle of buying groceries..........It really does get annoying, as people treat you as if you are "open all hours".

I am sure people think that if my car is in the driveway then I am available! They turn up right when I am feeding 12 dogs with chicken mince up to my elbows, set all the dogs off barking, and they dont see it that they have inconvenienced me at all..........

I am home today as I am getting all my dogs ready for an interstate show, by 9.30am I have already had 2 people drop by :thumbsup:

she expects me not to charge her as much just because i dont have to use fuel to get to her!!!

PS - Tell her you're booked for 3 weeks solid, but if she wants an appt you can do her dog for $XXX on >>> Day (Normal rate or add extra $ to normal rate)

LOL the funny thing is ive taken time off this week so shes been bugging me more than usual but ive got so much going on so even if i wanted to i can fit her in, i cant!!!

Some people never get it.

Ive' even had people try to talk me in to doing their dog when it is so hot that I wouldn't even do my own. You know the ones - "She is really matted I should have had her done MONTHS AGO" . When I ask why the dog wasn't done months ago it - you guessed it - too cold. When they won't take no, not now for an answer - Easy come back is "ok make you a deal, my garden is in desperate of weeding - you weed my garden for me and I will clip your dog", - "no bloody way it's too hot for that" that's when I tell them that is the reason why I am not going to do your dog. They aren't ready for come backs sometimes

I was mobile for about 4 years and for the past couple of years I have been working from home. I know how rude some people can be. When I first started I would try to please everyone - at my own physical expense, now I don't bother, it's either done when I want to do the dog, or they go somewhere else. Sooner or later they do come back, those that don't aren't worth it anyway.

This way it sorts out the people who are going to be loyal clients or just users, who ever can get the job done first.

I don't mind fitting in the nice clients as I do think that flexibility is important for business. If they are being rude then they don't get the next avail appoint. but one that I want to give them - they can take it or leave it.

Just ask them do they work on there days off or when they are on holidays. I bet they don't.

:) I knew it- she sounded like that.

This is a client you can do without.

Tell her when you're next appointment is available and cost- "not negotiable".

Say in a happy, upbeat way that you "won't be at all offended" if she gets someone else to groom for her.

I had a friend who had his own business and people would ring up demanding appts. that same day. He got good at saying, "No".

Invariably it was because they'd failed to have follow-up, not taken his advice in the first place, "forgot" to make an appt., or had waited until it was so bad that they definitely needed to see him. He'd just laugh about it: "An emergency in their own minds". It was extremely rare for a regular, co-operative client to need an appt like that.

eta: Apply dog training principles- be a leader, be consistent :wink: !

Yes its rude.

I find it rude when they come to my front door because I have a seperate building as the salon. Some people dont seem to realise the difference. Most of them its taken 4 or 5 times of me handing them a card and telling them to call me because I have visitors at the moment before they "get" it.

One lady was so rude that she turned up at 7pm and sent her daughter to knock on the door to tell me to come out to the car because her mum wants an appointment. Too lazy to even get out of the car herself to bother me!

I also find it rude when a client turns up early at 8-8:30am (when I open at 9am) and comes to my front door. I dont turn up at their home and demand they do work early.

Also...this week I seem to be the only person running on Daylight savings time (in Vic). 3 customers were each 30-45 minutes late today alone. Over the week I worked out the clients were 6 hours late in total!!!
