Guest Robatife BCs
Hi all, I was reading the other thread about mince and wondered about mince from the supermarket that comes pre-packaged. My dogs eat Eagle Pack and get the occasional chicken thigh or pig tail (I know it really looks like a pigs tail too ) They wont eat Eagle Pack unless I mix canned food in but I think it would be cheaper and better for them to mix mince in instead. I normally but human grade meats for my dogs but I was reading that some people are ok with the pet grade stuff. I am about to go to the supermarket now so I will get some when im there if it is ok stuff. At work we sell the Ecopet mince but it is pretty much the same price as the human grade mince Do you think the Ecopet mince would be better than the supermarket mince or are they basically the same? I have heard bad things about the preservatives in pet mince and i always see greenish coloured dye in it. Also, what brand would you buy and what brand wouldnt you buy? Flaves
I believe that the green dye is so that it is easily identified as pet mince. Personally i would go to a butcher and get minced frames. My BIL was telling me that at Coles, EVERYNIGHT, they have to mark down the mince that is marked am from that day. So if something is marked 10.30am and you are there at 8pm, they should have it marked down as they cannot legally/or by their standards. Check at your local coles, i know mine is doing it. And i got 4.2kg of PREMIUM mince for $14.00, instead of $22.00 So go to the supermarkets around 8.30pm-9pm and they should have marled down mince. I buy human mince or the um, it is in a purple bag with yellow writing(coles), or sometimes if they have nothing else Tucker Box? meat - it is diced or in steaks Hope i have helped. Guest Robatife BCs
Thanks for that. It was Safeway I go to, not Coles. I got some pre packaged mince, Kangaroo with Liver. There is no green dye in it that I can see, it looks like a good quality meat. As far as im aware, I thought the green dye was a preservative, not 100% though. JulesP
I only use human grade meat for the dogs. I'm a bit suss on the Ecopet mince, it must have preservatives in it as it has a really long use by date. My border eats the Eagle Pack so quickly he chokes on it! Have you tried soaking it in water? I would probably be seeing if they eat one of the other premium foods.

I would only consider feeding Nutro, Nutrience or Eagle Pack, all of which my dogs are fussy with. If I mix something in with it they will eat it, they just wont eat it alone. I dont think i would switch to anything else as I dont think they are that great a value for money and my dogs look great on Eagle Pack.
tashnchief
Have you tried approaching a local butcher. Probably someone who runs a small business would be your best bet. My local guy does a Beef pet mince that consists of mostly meat from the head ie- cheek and tongue but, basically it is just all the left over stuff from the carcass. It only has a small percentage of fat as not much fat is contained within the head meat and the dogs go nuts for it. He sells it prepackaged in 1kg blocks for convienence and he has minimal wastage and returns a better profit for it! Oh and the best part is it only cost me $1.40 per Kg. KitKat
The dye isn't a preservative - it's usually in the pet mince to turn off people from eating it themselves....
Purpley
I approached my local butcher and he does me a great deal on human grade mince, plus minced carcasses aswell. He even minces my offal - he is ace!!!
badboyz
I would not buy my pet mince from the supermarket at all. Talk to a butcher or find a pet food manufacturer for better quality pet mince without the preservatives.
sandgrubber
If you're looking for a source of good cheap mince . . . If there are any greyhound people in your neighborhood, ask them. Racing greyhounds eat piles of mince, and they cannot have food additives because it causes them to fail blood tests. My greyhound breeder neighbors get red meat mince in 20 kg packs for a bit over $1/kg.
tashnchief
Sandgrubber is right, Greyhound people are always the ones in the know. That's how I found my butcher!!!!!

Guest Robatife BCs
Thanks for your help I will have to source a Greyhound breeder! The green dye that is in mince is also in dog treats like Kangaroo Tendons, Emu Tendons, Emu Giblets etc, these treats are dried out and can NOT be mistaken for human consumption, so why do they put the green dye in dog treats if it isnt a preservative? arby
We get our mince from petbarn. big 10kg bags. Its fresh not frozen, so great for when we take it home to put it in take away containers. Definately wouldnt trust the pet mince from supermarkets
JulesP
I alternate the Eagle Pack (holistic one) with Proplan Sensitive, I think the dogs actually do better on the Proplan. I've got 'pet mince' from the butchers before, it was just the left over bits so no preservatives in that. You could also use stuff like eggs, sardines, yogurt to put over the dry food.
