Did Tucker Have A Fit?

... or am I overreacting? I can't decide.

About ten minutes ago, I was sitting outside with Tucker and a friend, and he started walking a bit funny. The two of us were concerned (friend is my ex and bought me Tucker for Christmas last year, so he's very attached to him too) and watched in horror as he started shaking quite heavilly and lost the ability to walk straight. He kept crouching over and looked like he was about to throw up at the same time. After a couple of minutes (I think? It seemed like forever :)) he stopped, and very quickly got back on his feet and was back to his normal bouncy self.

I'm freaked out. There are no signs anything has happened and I have no idea whether I should go to the vet? Has anyone gone through anything like this? The only thing he did before hand was eat some cheese, but he's eaten cheese plenty of times and its had zero effect on him.

My poor Tucky. :)

Amy Rose - it is possible this was a seizure. Don't panic your dog may never have another episode and if he does you can deal with it. If you google canine epilepsy you will get some great info - there is also a thread on this forum which is great and contains a video and some knowledgeable people. Will see if I can find it and give it a bump.

Seizures come in various strengths . . . and yes, that could be a mild seizure. Grand mal epileptic seizures get most of the press, but seizures of lesser severity (eg, the dog stays conscious and shows no dramatic symptoms) and less serious consequences for the dog are not uncommon. I read an article about Danish Labradors where the author found that a few percent of dogs get them. As frufru said, it could be a one off, or it could be something that happens periodically throughout Tucker's life. A vet can rule out some possible causes, but may have a hard time making a clear diagnosis. If you have another episode, it may be worth getting a few tests run.

Poor Tucker!!

You both must have been freaking out!

Hope he is all ok.

I am guessing your vet will make you monitor him and see if he has anymore then if he does they will probably suggest an MRI.

Hope he is ok and has no more.

ps. You 2 coming to Kepala??

My only advice would be to have a camcorder or a video capable mobile phone handy and record the next incidence. In most cases, if the dog now appears perfectly normal it is probably pointless to take them to the Vet with only a description of the event. Try to capture it on film and then take him to the Vet if you can.

Thanks for the advice guys. I figured it probably wouldn't be the best idea to rush him in to the vet. I'm not even sure it WAS a seizure. I had him at work with me today so I could monitor him, and he's been fine ever since it happened. I just hope he stays that way. I can't begin to express how much that little dog means to me.

Kristie, yes! Yes yes yes! I got him a spiffy new lead, collar and harness from work today so he can woo Mitchi.
