Natural Fly Repellant!

Hiya Everyone,

Fly season has started with a vengance in Central Queensland, and I'm looking for a natural fly repellant to use as I have Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, but my white bull terrier male is being bitten very badly by the flys already

Does anyone have any suggestions for me, it would be greatly appreciated

I dont know if this works for dogs, but I used to use Apple Cidar Vinegar in horses I added it to their food

Lavender Peppermint and Lemon Grass are good for keeping away both flies and fleas.

are you supposed to mix essential oils and together and spray the dog??

if so is there a ratio and do you just mix with water??

or grow that combination??

if it's this option can you just have it in pots around the yard??

say lavender in one pot, lemongrass in another pot and peppermint in another?

I use a Earthly Extracts shampoo that is supposed to help keep flys off dogs. That could be worth a try too.

eucalyptus? I use that to keep fly away from ME, seems to work a little.

(I can't bear to use citronella on myself too, I'd suffocate )

I usually put say three or four drops on each essential oil in about 200ml of water and spray on the animal..........i needs to be diluted because it can effect their skin

You can also grow the conbination, on the farm i used to have these readily available and in the summer i would dry some out and grind up........i would then use this to sprinkle on the horses coats...........

Neem oil does a variety of bugs too

Here is a Natural Non-Toxic Bug Spray

Ingredients:

3 ounces distilled water

1 ounce witch hazel (the alcohol)

6 drops lavender essential oil

3 drops tea tree essential oil

3 drops citronella essential oil

Place essential oils together in a glass spray bottle. Shake well. To really "marry" the aromas, allow the oils to sit together in the bottle for a week.

Add the distilled water and witch hazel. Shake to ensure the oils are fully incorporated.

To use, spray in and around areas where you want to repell bugs and inscects. Do not spray around the face and avoid eyes completely.

For those holistic followers the following recipes can be wonderful remedies. Since they are all natural, they will only help repel fleas, ticks and flies etc. and must be applied more frequently as well.

Herbal Critter Repellent Mix: Dried peppermint, eucalyptus, bay leaf herbs, marjoram, eucalyptus, rosemary, sage, clove buds.

Crush your botanicals well and fill a muslin bag or use it in the cedar chip mixture of your dogs bed. The muslin bags can be placed near your dogs bedding area.

Tick Spritzer Blend:

2 drops of Lavender, Basil, Lemon, Opoponax, Eucalyptus

1 tea spoon apple cider vinegar

1 tea spoon vodka

1 cup of dried marjoram, eucalyptus, rosemary

2 cups of water

Flea Spritzer Blend:

2 drops of cedarwood, lemongrass, rose geranium

1 tea spoon apple cider vinegar

1 tea spoon vodka

1 cup of dried peppermint, eucalyptus, bay leaf herbs

1- 2 cups of water

i am guessing having it in pots would deter the flies from even coming onto the property??
