Jrt (rough) People Or Groomers

I don't ever have rough JRT's in to groom, just baths for smooths. Anyway a guy called me yesterday to book his dog in for a clip. Turns out it's a rough coat (wire? not sure what you call it) JRT. So I sent him home and told him I'd look in to an alternative as I wasn't keen on clipping him. 10 month old pup, owner is worried he's suffering in the heat. Dog has indoor access when owner at work so I doubt he is suffering any more than the rest of us. Owner is also concerned about ticks but Ive recommended good prevention.

He is really keen to clip him, but Ive said Ill find out how the coat will grow back.???

Is there anywhere around Northern Beaches who do stripping?

How much could he expect to pay?

What sort of grooming utensil would thin the dogs coat if he chose to not clip or have stripped?

Thanks in advance

Rough coat (not wire) Dru, and the double coat should actually protect him from the heat. I'd say definitely dont clip him - it wrecks the insulation properties of the double coat. One of my roughs hates being stripped so I use a coatking on him when he gets too mutant afghan looking.

Pro strippers? I have no idea but not very cost effective. To give you an idea - I spent 4 hours on one of my boys on sunday and he's only half done. Gomez the Norfolk went to a pro stripper before she moved to sydney and it was hideously expensive. Quite frankly, you couldnt pay me to strip other people's dogs. It's bloody backbreaking. Tell him to get a decent comb and just comb his dog out every day. It'll take 5 minutes.

I agree, don't clip him, Coat King is the way to go :)

In Willoughby there is a grooming salon called Secret Dogs Business and they advertise stripping as a service - I know it's not in the Northern Beaches but it's not too far away.

Do they hand strip, Westie? I wouldnt let anyone near my dogs with a stripping knife if i didnt know them (come to think of it, I wouldnt let a hand stripper near my dogs unless I knew what their work was like either). I know of a doler who asked a pro groomer to strip her dog and he took him back to bald. Poor little guy was red raw.

Westielover, the Secret Dog's Business place changed hands and they no longer do stripping at all -

I did find a place in Balmain called Heavy Petting (I'm not kidding!) and they do stripping... but it is expensive $120 for Gomez... I did make a very specific list of what I wanted, how I wanted it, etc...

From what I have seen, and groomers/breeders have told me, when you clip a Norfolk, his wiry outer coat grows back soft and wavy, I can't imagine it woud be any different with a wiry JRT, same kind of coat - the softer coat not only looks silly on the doggies, but as Raz mentioned, it ruins the coat in the sense that they are no longer insulated or weather proof as they are meant to be...

I would also avoid the furminator, it cuts the rough outer coat while not really removing any of the undercoat, i have yet to try a Coat King...
