Shakti Posted October 18, 2007 Share Posted October 18, 2007 Hi everyone, I need some advice please. My GSD has one *lazy* ear which seems prone to what was diagnosed as an allergic reaction. (have no idea to what!) I have been using Melaseb and flushing the ear out which seems to help the extreme itchiness but now it looks...foul. It looks like there is an immense amount of wax coating the inside of his ear and kind of peeling off. I have no idea if this is the Melaseb or some pus-sy dried stuff. Sorry I cannot be more descriptive. It is VERY itchy and yet when I try to help gently rub some of the stuff off from the inside of his ear (which is also in the ear canal part) he acts as if it is hurting. A GSD breeder suggested I just try flushing the ear out with salt water instead. Any thoughts?? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Scales of Justice Posted October 18, 2007 Share Posted October 18, 2007 Definitely a job for the vet. Is the Malaseb actually burning the skin? Could it be the top layer of skin peeling off? I would suggest you should clean away all the visible wax with some cotton wool and/or cotton buds and re-examine the skin underneath. Clean the gunk out of the ear canal too. bonny_beagle Posted October 18, 2007 Share Posted October 18, 2007 Plain sorbolene cream can be used as a cleanser but not inside the canal. For the skin you can easily get to it might soften the gunk so it will come off without rubbing. Leave it on a few mins then gently wipe off with tissues/tp. Just a suggestion, never tried it myself but it's probably what I would try in your situation. Then off to the vet for better ear drops. My vet kept giving me the same thing for an allergic lab to no effect but a different ointment we got from the dermatologist worked wonders. Goodluck. wolfgirl Posted October 18, 2007 Share Posted October 18, 2007 Definitely needs to be seen by a vet asap. Use baby wipes inside the ear to help clean it. Ears are very sensitive so best not to be putting anything like cotton buds down them in case you push too far sounds like he needs eardrops. Good Luck. I have put some soothing cream on his ears tonight as per your suggestions and in fact the ears are looking far better with all the gunk gently cleaned off. Poodle wrangler Posted October 19, 2007 Share Posted October 19, 2007 Malaseb should be diluted 1:50 with water. Mixed well. They used to suggest 1:30, but found the 1:50 just as effective, with less irritation. You quirt several drops into the ear, squish it around at the base of the ear, then let dog shake his ears and wipe away excess with a cotton ball? oonga Posted October 19, 2007 Share Posted October 19, 2007 (edited) Thanks Feralpup, i know that he did look into her ear with something.... no idea what?? after her first lots of drops he even told me to look, to show that although the infection was mostly cleared up there was still a bit of it left. after her second lot of drops it was all cleared up, no idea if what he looked down her ear with would have showed a perforated ear drum though? i must ask him next time she has to go for something. but i was wondering are there any symptoms that you can see or differences you can notice from before to after the perforation?? J... Posted October 20, 2007 Share Posted October 20, 2007 The vet could see the ear drum was perforated by viewing it with the otoscope. There was some concern that maybe there was a foreign body in her ear which caused the perforation but without putting the dog under GA or heavily sedating they couldn't tell. Darcy's really well behaved so they were able to see the eardum - I would imagine some dogs wouldn't have let them check that deep. I didn't notice the infection until I took her out for a run, had to tire her out before she started to tilt her head and shake it every now and then. When I checked the ear it was quite mucky so I had her in the vets 1st thing next morning. Was then that they told me re: the perforation. No other signs that there was a problem.... Although i noticed inside her ear was a bit crusty the week before nad the vet said it was fine. Within a week it had ulcerated and was very painful for her. I had asked for anitbiotics or sommething then but was told all was ok. If you are not happy with what your vet said keep questioning him.
