Teaching Your Pup To Tell You

Well have asked a toilet training question before but after the last few days I'm getting worried I maybe doing something wrong, so here goes..... I got Cody 3 weeks ago and I have been taking him out every half hour to an hour for the toilet and big praise when he goes and while he is doing his business I say the word 'toileys' so he knows what it means etc etc, I take him out after every sleep, and every meal, he has been really good for his age, only had afew accidents in the first few days, then because I'm on the ball with him, he has had no accidents right up til the past few days ;) and over night he is great, but I do get up around 6ish am every morning to take him out, now you must be thinking...well whats the problem?? my concern is all our dogs we have had...including Minx NEVER ask to go out if they need to, they just sit quietly at the door until someone happens along to let them out, I saw Minx one day almost sweating she was so busting to go but not a peep out of her the silly girl :( anyway it has been said to me in the past that because I'm always on the ball when they are pups and take them out all the time that they never learn to 'ask' to go out, they just wait until someone lets them out, so with Cody the last few days has had acouple of poo's and last night he did about 3 pee's that I wasn't quick enough to take him out or he had done it just after I let him back inside (which is what I think happened) so can anyone give me some advice to teaching him to ask/cry when he needs to go?? something I can start teaching him now so when he is fully house trained he will let us know, I dont want yet another dog that doesn't ask to go out

Ours always just go to a door and stand there...so I can't help.

At this very early stage, he will not be able to 'tell' you, I wouldn't think...

maybe....maybe...

if you put a little bell or something at his level near the door...and EVERYTIME you go out with him, ring the bell...& immediately open the door...then show HIM how to use a nose or paw to ring the bell... just a maybe

My pig used to do this..but I have never taught a puppy to :0

Poppy is very good at telling me when she wants to go outside. She just stands there and stares at me and if I dont let her out she makes a little Yip and keeps doing it till I let her out. (she only started doing it when she was a bit older though, not a puppy... just when her attitude kicked in)

Daisy doesnt do that really. She barks if she is totally busting but otherwise nothing. I usually just leave the door open anyway.

Perhaps if everytime they are waiting at the door you encourage them to make some sort of noise before you open the door for them, then they might get the hint?

 I have actually seen a dog that rings a bell to be let out....can't remember where, but at the time thought it was cute. Now that persephone has reminded me I am going to try it with my girls.....they scratch at the door....poor paint.

My girl is in a small pen, but I can always hear when she wants to go out because she starts to do laps (puppy paws on a wooden floor are noisy) if I dont wake up from that, she stand on the edge of the pen at the end of my bed and starts to whimper. When she doesnt need to go to the toilet, but wakes up, she just stands at the edge of her pen and watches me, thats how I can tell the difference! (but she is 15/16 Weeks)

Although, I am naughty and I take her out once suring the night (around 3) when she wakes up, and then again at 5.30 when I get up. Apparentely she should be able to hold on through the night, but she has a habit of peeing on her bedding if she cant hold on- and its gross and smelly and i get sick of washing it, so I just get up and suffer my disrupted sleep!

I bought her a new bed the other day (Barka Parka) so I am super careful to take her out whenever she needs so she doesnt make this bed stinky too !!

Good luck. It sounds like you are doing pretty good anyway!

I'm having the same problem with my pup!

All our other dogs have just stood at the door, but if we take to long to notice, they yip. However Ziva appears to go to the door just as she needs to tilet. Most of the time I am able to catch her but a few times I hvae not been fast enough. So she knows to go outside (and if the backdoor is open during the day, she will go out when she needs to), but doesn;'t know how to ask!!

I have been thinking about the bell thing actually.
