Another Question - Recall In Cd

Recommended Posts

I am curious about others views on this:

A CD recall:

Leave you dog- Dog Stays (Command -STAY)

About turn and halt

Call your dog - dog comes but STANDS in front (Command - COME)

Finish your dog - Dog comes around back to heel position and sits (Command DOGS NAME - ROUND)

Score - 0

Zero score: For a dog that breaks from position, or does not come on the first command or for a dog that anticipates the command to come.

The new rules list substantials as for slow response to commands, for failure to come at a brisk pace.

Under the old rules a failure to sit in front would only have been a substantial. Its not listed in the new rules but maybe a substantial for the failure to sit in front.

Failure - either from lacking to 'sit' (not completing the recall exercise)

or because of two substantials - you said the dogs NAME to go around (substantial - if you didn't pause) AND dog stood...

Possibly.....

Score = 0

There are 3 possibilities ......

You are only allowed to use the dogs name at the beginning of the exercise. Failing to sit in front would be a substantial & maybe the judge decided that the dog wouldnt have done the finish if you hadn't said it's name, which would be another substantial. Although that may not have added up to 0.

Another possibility is that the dog anticipated the command & moved before it was supposed to. I see heaps & heaps of people all the time who don't give their signals & verbal commands at exactly the same time & guess which one the dog moves on? Yep the hand signal - you only have to move your arms a fraction of an inch & a keen dog will see it & respond. Lots & lots of novice handlers do it & don't even realise what they have done wrong, but a good judge will spot it straight away. Anticipation will earn you a 0.

But my bet is that the dog lifted it's bum after it had been left & you didnt see it as you were walking away.

Dog did not anticipate, nor did he lift him bum as I was walking away. I have no idea if I left a pause between his name and the command because I don't remember using his name.

JUdge said he got a minor for failure to sit and then a zero because I used his name. If I had not used his name he would have got 1 minor (failure to sit).

When I saw him he was standing beside you not in front and you moved your upper body towards him. You then gave a signal to finish. Did you maybe give 2 finish signals or the upper body movement was taken as a signal?

One finish command/signal (and his name). When asked later the judge said if not for using him name he would have got 1 minor (failure to sit).

I am not sure what you are asking? Do you think you were unfairly treated?

I was just curious if using a name (apart from when you start off etc..) was an automatic zero. I spoke to several other people after (some judges) who were surprised at his score.

Anyway thank you all for your replies. It was one day, one judge and one opinion.

I thought you could only use the dogs name at the start of the excersise? and would think it was a "0" due to using it during the excersise.

Bummer ;)

I stuffed on the weekend too !!!

Coopers first CD trial, and I threw the dumbell while he wasn't watching me (my fault) and when I said "fetch" he took a couple of steps out and then looked at me as if to say "fetch what"

Me the stupid dumb handler ;)
