Mushaka
A friend has recently taken in a dog that her friend was forced to surrender. This dog is a very nervous dog,and growls at strangers. I visited her tonight and sat in a chair and let her approach me(luckily i had been forewarned of her behaviou). She sniffed me ,so i put my hand out slightly and limply to let her sniff further and she was growling straight away. She growls at stranger..at my friend if she has her hair in a towel, wears hats..ANYTHING on a persons head..her kids put a cushion on thier heads while i was there, and she lunged at them growling(her kids are teens so not TOO scary). She asked wat i would do ... TBH,I told her since i have small kids,i would surrender her.In my area we have two LOW kill shelters, they can asses if she is rehomable... She walks this dog everyday, what if a child walked over to this dog ,God forbid wearing a hat ?? My friend is not very dog savvy at the best of times ..she just cant get over the guilt of giving up on this dog,but also doesnt want the stress of an accident waiting to happen! She DOES NOT have the funds to train, and this issue goes beyond what I can handle! I can offer her no help!! Are there ANY suggestions for her to aid in helping this dog,or should she hand it over to someone better equipt?? ETA- this isnt a breed issue, just thought i wld mention her type so we were all on the same page Edited October 12, 2007 by Lewis & Lyn

Nekhbet
If she cant afford a behaviourist or expert advice this dog may be better rehomed with a professional or put in for assessment. Although this behaviour may be the dogs death warrant. This dog should not be let near strangers at all, its been unsettled and doesnt know the pack in the house then suddenly new people come in and start touching it. The dog is not sure whats going on and showing you its not happy with the situation so it shouldnt be put in it. Let the dog settle and make sure she shows the dog good leadership, dont try and initiate play with the dog I would be ignoring it. This dog has growled before to get out of an uncomfortable situation and I bet when the dog growls the people move away - dog gets what it wants. Take an overall look at the dog, PM K9. If the dog cannot be managed satisfactorily or safely rehomed then PTS is an option.
Tonymc
It would be interesting to see what the Sire and Dam of this Dog are like. Tony
Mushaka
TonyMc let me tell you,the original owner of the dog,has a seedy past to put it politely...i HIGHLY doubt that he would have viewed Sire and dam. Its a very long story on how my friend came about caring for this dog. I have instructed her to release the dog to someone more capable. She feels so guilty, but i think TBH that this dog is WAY over her head.
