baileyb
My 5yo English Springer injured her albow a couple of years ago and her joint show signs of the onset of arthritis. Although I give her glucomamine daily, she sometimes re-injures the joint (usually chasing a ball)and it is sore for 24hrs and then she is fine again for months. Can anybody give me some advice in relation to some instant pain relief that I can give her intead of going to the vet each time and getting anti-inflammatory medications? Any/all suggestions will be much appreciated. Liz
Dogsfevr
Well the first thing would be not to do games that inflame the joint, ball chasing causes all sorts of joint issues at the best of times but if the dog is suffering afterwards i wouldnt be doing it. If you do alternative games then you wont need to give pain killers for that problem. You can do all sorts of natural stuff its a case of what works for each dog
cavNrott
I would put the dog on Joint Guard. Glucosamine alone really doesn't help a lot. It will take a few weeks before you see improvement but Joint Guard does work. I would also stop all ball chasing until at least some improvemnt is evident. My dog is limited to 5 throws of the ball in the leash free park. Anymore than than and she will limp after resting. She was on 7 weeks rest before I started throwing the ball for her again. I do realise that her chasing a ball can be a problem but so can many other things in her life like running down the back stairs at the speed of light or landing awkwardly when racing to get out of the car. This is a fact of life and both her vet and chiro have told me that she can and will inflame the injury at any time. They have told me it would be very much like us rolling an ankle. On the other, Cleo competes in Masters Agility and Masters Jumping and has never injured herself or even pulled up sore. So if anyone can offer me some advice on temporary pain relief, I would appreciate it. Liz
cavNrott
Sorry but I wouldn't give any temporary pain relief that wasn't prescribed by a vet. In our case I buy from the vets the large bottle (60 tablets) of Rimadyl and use only when necessary. I would put the dog on Joint Guard because it will not only lessen the inflammation but does a pretty good job of protecting the joint so may prevent the problem from occuring in the first place.
