Daxilly
OH is on the way to the Vet with our ACD, who has been acting really strangely for the past 3 hours. She appears to be in a lot of pain, will not sit still, panting and when we tried to lift her tail, for a tick check, let out a yelp. Her bark appears not as loud and is a higher pitch, if this makes sense. We didn't find a tick. It seemed to occur after her dinner, which she ate normally There has been no vomiting but we have not seen any bowel movement so not sure about diarrhea(sp) We are thinking maybe constipation or bowel blockage. Could be a tick but she isn't lethargic, just restless. Being married to a higher functioning hypochondriac, thankfully this also extends to the dogs so it was off to the Vet with the credit card in hand. Any ideas apprecaited Thanks
Poodle wrangler
Sorry, I don't know, but I'm glad you didn't muck about and got your dog to the vet asap!
Daxilly
Thanks! OH is just back and the Vet has kept her in overnight. He thinks it might be constipation as he gave her a thorough examination and could find nothing else. He did a rectal exmination and the stool was hard and crumbly. Will give her a supository and if no luck will give her an enema in the morning. Thank goodness for the credit card!!!
Poodle wrangler
I'm sure I read here on DOL that a good, temporary "cure" for constipation was the cheapest can of dog food you can find . What do you normally feed? How much exercise? Perhaps we can offer some constructive advice? Let us know how he goes. I think it was good you went to the vet because more sinister problems can have similar signs.
Daxilly
Well there was no movement this morning although she did strain trying. Vet put her under for an xray and discovered she was "chockers" to use his words. Thankfully no blockage but she was compacted. She has been "cleaned out" and we are picking her up this afternoon. She gets plenty of exercise as OH or I are home 24/7 so it is a constant run, swim or chase from sunrise to sunset. Being an ACD you can't keep her still. She is on a raw diet which includes oily fish, mince, vegetable mix every second day, yoghurt and bones. We will have to modify the number of bones as we think this may be the issue. We are also looking at psylium (sp) husks to increase her fibre content and also increasing her vegetables to every day. We will start slowly as we don't want the opposite affect. Funnily our lab, who has the same diet and lifestyle has absolutely no problems on this diet .
persephone
Poor dog... glad you got it sorted Psyllium husks are a nice gentle way to help.Because it is essentially a GEL, there is no harsh fibre. You only need a little..as it will absorb water from the gut and expand. It can also be soaked before feeding if you like...soak it for about 10 minutes or so in warm water, then use. The vet recommended it for Hamlet after bowel surgery..he said that because it is a gel, it helps to stop some things from further irritating the bowel wall by lubricating/protecting. Daxilly
Thanks, we got some psyllium husks today! How much should I give her? She weighs 20 kg. Would it be Ok to sprinkle over her dinner or should I soak and then mix it into her food?
persephone
You only need about a half teaspoonful... soak it preferably and mix with food..or just sprinkle, and make sure she has plenty to drink.
