moggy
Bought a pigs ear for the first time today from a pet shop and gave it to my Chihuahua. He loves it! My questions is, what are the benefits of pigs ears? Is it good for their teeth? There are so many "chews" to choose from I am not sure which are the best. Moggy. alanglen
Pretty limited benefits! It's pork crackling in very large supply!! They love the taste but who doesn't love the taste of fat, crackling and salt? They may enjoy the taste and be good from a fun/behaviou aspect but there is absolutely no health benefits at all!! Catch your local vet or vet nurse about more appropriate treats that are lower in fat!
Toohey
No real benefits I would think.... just skin and fat and a yummy treat. I found they were great however when my pup was teething. If you soak them for a bit in water they go all rubbery, and are good for them to chew to help get the baby teeth out.
Poodle wrangler
For chew toys, I like the Kong brand as well as the "Chew N Kleen" (something like that- whitish moulded 'bones' in supermarket). Brisket bones and chicken necks would be good as well (deduct off total food intake).
WinGus
My little one likes the rawhide chew sticks, although they probably have as much, or even less, nutritional content than pig's ears!! And she's now actually going through them pretty fast. She doesn't seem keen on the moulded bones. Everytime I've given Pepper a pig's ear, she carries it around the house and tries to hide it. Then she will go back to it, pick it up and look for another hidey spot. This goes on all day with various distractions in between. The serious, almost desperate look on her face when she's searching for that ultimate hiding place is priceless!
moggy
Well, he finished his pigs ear after a couple of trips in the garden and then into his bed in the lounge room where he blissfully chewed until it was about 1 inch in size. I won't be getting him another one though as they are not really good for him. Got some lovely fresh meaty bones yesterday and gave him one. He was not very interested in it and has buried it for further consideration. lol. Moggy.
