Von Willebrand's Disease

Von Willebrand's disease (VWD) is the most common inherited bleeding disorder in dogs.

The disease results from more than one abnormality of the factor VIII complex (Dodds, 1984). The most frequent symptoms of VWD include formation of haematomas (swellings under the skin filled with blood), intermittent lameness (from bleeding into and around the joints) and bloody discharges from body openings. Other clinical signs include: prolonged estrual or postpartum bleeding, excessive umbilical cord bleeding at birth, excessive bleeding from toe nails cut too short, or after tail docking, ear cropping or dewclaw removal. Severely affected dogs may bleed to death from surgical procedures.

A DNA test is now available to show clear, affected or carrier dogs.

Are standard poodles normally health tested for this (Vetgen for DNA) ?
