Hip Dysplasia Concerns

Ari - We have two girls from the same litter. We own the girls and one of them is the one being tested for HD.

Whilst seeing the people we bought them off a few weeks ago, the owner of my beagles mum said that Sally (our beagle) sat like her mother. Which doesn't really help my situation seeming it's hereditary.

FYI - these puppies were bought from a BYB before we knew about DOL and the problems with BYB's and puppy farmers. We have learnt our lesson and won't be doing it again.

Erin why don't you go and see Rowan Kilmartin? He is a Vetinary chiropractor (fully qualified as both). He will assess your dog physically and then he will go right on and do x rays on the spot if he thinks they are necessary. He looks after all my show dogs and has done for over 4 years. When I had my boy x-rayed there it cost about $180 and that was including the consult. The only time he has recommended x rays with any of my dogs (he diagnoses mostly by watching gait and by feel and manipulation of limbs) it was genuinely required and turned out to be a very good idea.

He is at Ormeau, less than ten minutes south of Beenleigh.

blacklabrador - oh thanks for that, I don't know about people who specialise in this area so it's great that people like yourself let me know!

I'll PM you to get his details and give him a call tomorrow.

Thanks! It's hard when you have vets telling you to go through a vet and other people saying go through a chiro, but if he is all three, then that's fantastic! I'd rather not have to put her through x-rays if we don't have to!

Argh, sorry Erin - I didn't even stop to think that I was talking gobbledygook with the scores.

Keeping it really simple, each hip is scored and the lower the score the better the hip - the score for each hip can be between 0 (best) and 53 (worst). Enya is a 1:3, which means her left hip scored 1 and her right hip scored 3 - so she has good hips.

The scoring is done by professional readers - so when breeders talk about hip scoring, they have the x-rays taken by a vet and then those x-rays are sent off to the reader to be scored, so the scoring is a separate process. You shouldn't have to worry about going into that much detail - I only gave the scores as an indication to show that Enya sits the same, and she has good hips :)

Rowan Kilmartin sounds wonderful, blacklabrador! Can he move down to north east Victoria? :(

Thanks for the explaination Allerzeit. Great to know that good hips can still mean they can sit like that.

I've booked Sally in for tomorrow afternoon with Dr Rowan Kilmartin. He's going to do the consult first, and see if she needs the x-rays. If she needs them, we'll book another appointment for her.

They are open till 6pm which is good because I can finish work at 4, go home and get the grubs, put them in the car and drive down to Ormeau before 5pm. I'll update you all tomorrow afternoon. Kinda makes me more scared knowing there'll hopefully be an answer tomorrow afternoon!

ETA: Thanks for the referral blacklabrador, if you hadn't of mentioned him, I wouldn't have known about them.

I'm suspicious that there's something wrong with my young dog also- luxating patellas been diagnosed, but his walk/ run/ stance doesn't look 100% right to me :( . I had the knees XRayed but not the hips. He's 9 months old.

I've been so fortunate with healthy dogs both from breeders and the pound and have been surprised how upset I feel for our dog. Our children also love him dearly.

If you're having XRays done, check this out: http://www.leerburg.com/hipart.htm.

Maller also posted about a Yahoo group Orthodogs : http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/orthodogs/ (thanks, Malleer).

Good luck, I hope everything's OK. Fingers and paws crossed for you :).

One of my lab bitches sits like that on my slippery floor also.

She also sits over on one side. Dont know how to explain...but she has always done it. Like a lazy sit...with her feet out one side. She drops the same as well...hardly ever in a sphinx position, like they should.

One night at obedience the trainer said "thats a sure sign of HD" cos she wont sit properly.

My bitch has a "perfect" hip score. 0:0

But I will say that some dogs can live a good life if they do have HD without going through expensive operations.

That's exactly what she does. If her legs aren't sliding out on the floors, she's sitting with her legs to the side. If her legs are spread apart and she drops, she doesn't bring them back in, she just drops and her legs are still spread out. To me it looks painful, but if she's doing it, it's obviously not to her!

Hopefully this will be the case that she is just a lazy sitter.

NOOOO I need him right here!!

He will be seeing the Hamster for the first time tomorrow. That will be a challenge!!

So can I name drop BL? Oh, BL that was in here today advised me to come to you. She bought her hampster in today didn't she?

Thank you to everyone else for your concerns, I will let you all know this afternoon when we get home what the outcome is. If she needs x-rays, they won't be done tonight as there won't be enough time. HOPEFULLY I can just come home and say there's no concerns and we don't have to go back for x-rays. *crosses fingers/arms/legs/paws*

Thanks for all the finger crossing... it seems to have worked

Rowan checked both of them over and Sally seems to have a loose stivell muscle... or something? But thinks that it's only loose because she's still growing and hopefully if we get her to sit properly over time, they will tighten up and not be an issue.

He also checked Leia over and beside her bent tail, she is fine!

So, everythings okay :) Very happy and a huge recommendation for Rowan and that vet, they were all very nice. To stay back after an emergency to consult us, was great.

Thanks for all your concern and help. We were so glad to hear that there's nothing.

He just advised us that we need to teach them both to sit properly, and correct their legs if they don't sit right. By doing this, hopefully it will help Sally's muscles strengthen and teach them to sit properly without their legs sliding out.
