schnauzer_luv
Mazza and I went to the vet today for his 2nd vacc and they were selling greenies at the counter...so I thought I'd get one for Maz to try, coz he was such a good boy at the vets. I gave it to him at 10.00 when we got home and he has been chewing at it religiously for almost 2 hours! Occaisionally he "buries" it in another location of the study for 2 mins and then runs around manically searching for it again so he can have a good old chew...I dont think I've ever seen him so quiet. If you haven't tried them, get some!! I only bought one in case he didn't like it but I'm definitely going to get some more.
Silverblue
Apperantley they are quite harmful to dogs
poodlefan
A number of dog forums (including this one) have had discussions about the potential for these chews, if swallowed in chunks, to cause bowel obstructions. I'll stick with real bones for my guys.
Poodle wrangler
I've given them to one of my dogs in the past and he liked them, too. Sorry to be a party pooper, but I know I've read they can cause major problems for dogs, too. Sorry, can't remember the details but do remember thinking, "Thank God he was OK. Won't buy those again". Rawhide chews can also cause problems. Some vets will say even raw bones can cause problems, but then it gets in to seriously no fun for dogs territory. Right sort of bones, raw cause minimal problems.
schnauzer_luv
Ooops Had no idea! My pup gets real bones too, I just thought I'd try them because they were there. There was no swallowing in chunks...it took him a couple of hours to eat the smallest version, I guess I won't buy anymore in that case...anyone got a link to the threads so I can have a look? That's scary...
patch
I believe there was stories coming out of the States a couple of years ago about Greenies being alleged to have caused the death of dogs - yes due to chunks not being digested and causing bowel obstruction. I'm not on the list anymore where I saw that though so I have no idea of the current thinking. I think there might have been a court case?
Rainey
Interesting, I bought a bag of rawhide chews the other day (which admittedly only last about 5 minutes with Scud), but they don't seem to stay very hard for long, they soften up with his saliva. I don't actually know what Greenies are.
tramissa
If you do a search for greenies you should find the thread. Have definitely heard more than a few cases where they have caused death.
schnauzer_luv
I feel like a bad mummy now , and I'm really worried pup is going to get sick....in fact I feel sick He is currently sleeping, hope he is ok when he wakes up
tramissa
He will probably be okay Thousands of dogs eat them with no problems, there's just a high proportion of those that do. If he 'gummed' it, rather than breaking it into chunks and swallowing it, he'll probably be okay
Her Majesty Dogmad
I stopped giving them to mine after reading about the problems
Di*
I feel like a bad mummy now , and I'm really worried pup is going to get sick....in fact I feel sick He is currently sleeping, hope he is ok when he wakes up The reliability of the claims about the harmful effects of Greenies is unclear from what I can gather. See link below: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/greenies.asp There certainly is truth to the claim that even raw bones can be harmful. My chi x had a tiny splinter of raw chicken wing wedged in his oesophagus which fortunately the specialist vets managed to remove. Up to that point he'd had chicken wings almost daily without incident. As is the case for our (human) kids, we can't protect our dogs from everything. Rather, we balance the risk of poor dental health against the dangers of bones, greenies, rawhide, toys etc... Di

The Spotted Devil
For just something to munch on in the house I like giving Zig a Nylabone - as long as you get one strong enough not to be destroyed. It really helped him through the teething stage too. I've heard varying reports about Greenies....I won't feed them just in case
schnauzer_luv
Good news so far Pup has woken up from his nap...done vigorous zoomies and then gobbled down some treats during training...today we refined high 5 and learned gimme 10! Am relieved but will be watching carefully...no more greenies for us though...
wagsalot
Yep, Ive heard bad things about greenies too. Didn't someone even say it made their dog's poo green? Its hard when vets sell them, as you'd think they'd be safe. My vet used to sell them, but has stopped now.
Kadbury
;) I have had a scare with the rawhide chews too.....My dog loved it and sat quietly chewing on it - Lucky I was there because she started choking :D but I could still see the rawhide chew with half still sticking out of her mouth = as Rainey said the saliva had softened it and it finished up about 6" long all soft and streched, when I pulled it out = my girls now only get chicken necks for chewing but they do love me brushing their teeth too... stormie
Just thought i'd let you all know, Greenies have changed hands (now owned by masterfoods I think) and they have made them with a new formula after the problems that happened in the US. They are now incredibly digestible and have a different texture, much more like rubber - really flexible. Can't remember what the difference is, but we have it all at work so I'll type it out tomorrow if anyones interested! Still really expensive though, and considering you need to use them every day to see benefits, much more economical (and probably better for the dog!) to just gives bones!!
