gilbertgrape
gilbertgrapeMy cocker has HD and was diagnosed at the age of 7 months. With controlled exercise, massage, bowen therapy, and joint guard we have been able to control this condition. It may be different with your dog as he is older but with Maggie the specialist did say that because she is young if we do the non surgical approach she may develop a psuedo hip and by excercising, the muscles build up to support the hip. I feel this has happened as she is now nearly 2 and yes some days she has discomfort but she is not in the pain she was at 7 months . Yes tell the breeder she needs to know. Hi magthedag, what is bowen therapy? It sounds interesting. It sounds like joint guard is a good product. I wish I had looked into his weird gait earlier in the piece, then it could have been diagnosed sooner and it may not have degenerated so far as it has. I guess we live and learn don't we? Thanks for your reply GG.
gilbertgrape
My Cavalier who is now 4 also has HD. She has acupuncture every month, goes to the chiro every 3 months, is on a homeopathic anti inflammatory, and a liquid glucosamine. We also do exercises every day and she is going well. I might look into accupuncture.... the lady next door does it on humans... I wonder if she'd do it on a dog!!!
MTD
very simply Bowen is a very very gentle massage with no manipulation . The therapist can realign muscle and tendons. There is much more of course to it than that . The bowen therapist I know also works on the mind as well don't ask me how and I don't really understand it and find it hard to believe but hey it works. so I let her do her stuff . She is a qualified animal bowen therapist as well as a human one. Joint guard is brilliant stuff have tried sasha's blend but find the joint guard works better . If you haven't started on some sort of glucasamine formular I would suggest you do as it takes a few weeks but you will see a difference.

NaturallyWild
Is it ok if I use the lipped mussel capsules and glucosamine together do you know? Yes, some joint supplements have these mixed already. The green lipped muscle has a wide range of substances that naturally occur in it including omega 3s, glucosamines, chondroitin sulphates. Some dogs (or people) find that they need extras of some of these and do better. Biggest tip for you to be able to do is to keep the weight off your dog (i prefer slightly under weight) and as fit and strong as possible - lots of exercise/swimming. This helps reduce excess stress to the joints. Joint guard is probably one of the better ones out there, but i would definitely combine with a green lipped muscle extract - have seen some great and rapid results with this. Thanks so much for your advice! The vet gave me some green lipped muscle, and I'll also order some joint guard. Excellent
