julesluvscavs
HI everyone A while back i had Joey's teeth cleaned(they were heavily plagued) As he doesn't chew bones, the vet suggested i get him onto the dry food as mentioned in my title. I of course didn't buy the biscuits at the time (because of the cost), but since then his mouth is smelly again So i went and bought a small pkt yesterday, to see if it actually helps I have tried to read the measures for what i have to give them each (i'm going give Renae them too), but it seems a lot. I know it's a complete meal, and concentrated, but it seems more than what i normally give them (which is a handful of normal dry food and small amount of mince loaf/casserole ) They get a chicken neck each once or twice a week as well. So it says based on small dogs under 10 kg (which both mine are 'just', and if needing to shed weight (as mine have been) to give them 180 grams (2 cups each) once a day (which i will probably divide up for some breaky as well) Does this sound right??? It looks like a lot in their bowls, compared to what i normally give. I am just trailing it for now, as if it works out that i go through it too fast and it costs heaps, i may have to think of another option .. I can ring the vet to ask them, but thought i would see if anyone else gives their similar size dogs it, to see if i what i am doing is correct? Thanks ! Ellis
I am no expert but aren't the figures on the bag a guide for an animal that eats nothing but the dry food?

Gayle.
That sounds a HUGE amount for a little dog. My little dog would get about 3/4 of a cup of food each day. She's not a big eater but puts on weight easily.

Georgie-boy
Jules all those amounts on the bags are guides and I find most of them to be very generous - I always feed less than the suggested amount. Change the amount to suit your two. You'll soon know if its not enough - they'll be gnawing on your ankles!!

Thanks Georgie -boy they seem more than contented tonight with that size serve Will be interesting to see if they wake me up at 4am tomorrow morning to beg me for breaky I will be giving less than that amount, or i will go through it way too quickly ! (and it's not cheap, especially if feeding 2 dogs with it) Give your two a cuddle from me Jules x

scubadog30
Hi Jules, Because every dog has a different metabolism and exercise routines, the feed guide on the bags are just that. Guides! However two cups of dry a day for small Cavies, does sound like a lot to me, especially as cavs are not really know for their love of exercise. I have Jack Russell's, And i go by the Rule of, For each 10kg of weight that your dog weighs, you feed one cup of food per day. I have found this is spot on for me. But as I said every dog is different so keep an eye on your dog and adjust as necessary. Edited September 12, 2007 by scubadog30
KitKat
Are you using a normal food measuring cup to measure...or the RC measuring cup? But in general much will depend on how much exercise they get (should list with a couple of exercise levels as well) and how the metabolise their food. But usually the guide on the bag is more they need...lol. Also it does work out cheaper to buy the bigger bag...it's a larger outlay but per KG it's cheaper And nab one of the frequent purchaser cards to go with it. julesluvscavs
Thanks everyone Hi KitKat, i used a Tupperware measuring jug to measure it out .. it has cup measurements on it. Well they were playing around the house worse than ever last night ! Grrrrr They seem to be overstimulated ! They are finally alseep now ! at 9.45am! I've even started walking them every afternoon to tire them out .. to stop them being active during the nights. I'm going to try giving them a cup each at night, and a tiny handful for breaky... I'll have to play it by ear. Edited September 13, 2007 by JulesLuvsCavs
KitKat
Just remember that with the kibbles being different sizes and weights that size will cause issues with weight unless you are checking the amount on the scales. The Royal Canin cups list weight amounts for each food on their cups...so that 180gms of one food is going to fill their cup more then another type. Eg their lab food is a big light-ish kibble with a hole thru the middle where as their 4400 is a smaller flat dense kibble - if you filled a normal cup with it you are going are going to get differing weights 'per cup' of each.
