I have a 18 week old GSD and I have been feeding him Vets all natural since I got him as this is what the breeder feed.

I am not convinced he does well on it, I wieght it all out and feed it with either beef mince or roo mince. He always seems thin and he also gets chicken carcass's and wings daily. he has a shiny coat but is always itchy and thats not from washing him as he hasnt been washed for 6 weeks.

Does anyone have any opinions of it?

oh, his poos seem large and he does about 4 in 24 hours, I can see a lot of the vets all natural in it kind of looking the same as when it was in his bowl.

He also regularly eats his droppings.

I hope you get some responses that help Daggles

I've only used it once, as recommended by the breeder of the pup, but she didn't do well on it and I switched her to a good quality dry food instead. The 2 pups from the same litter that the breeder kept had trouble with floppy ears and being generally loose overall and they stopped using it also.

Oh dear ISH, Mavricks ears are still floppy!

I dont know if he is loose all over, I wouldnt know what to look for.

I know of 2 other GSD breeders who used it but said the pups stopped eating it when rehome at 8 weeks old. I thought this might have been because new owners wherent getting in mixed right...

What dry food do you feed?

my two dobes are on it, the young one was brought up on it. They do very well on it, getting it about 3 times a week mixed with mince meat.

Rest of the diet is meaty bones, chicken, lamb flaps etc.

But I do use missing link as a supplement.

If your dog is thin perhaps you dont feed enough? my puppy dobe when she was growing up was eating pretty much the same amount as the grow up.

I personally thing that there are too much grain used in the VAN, much of it doesn't get digested and comes straight out the other end (dogs struggle to process the cellulose). In saying that many dogs do very well on it, just like many dogs do well on dry dog food.

I would suggest you try and see/contact someone with knowledge (vet/natural therapist) regarding your dogs diet and health. He may need some pre and por biotics to boost his digestive plus other nutrients (oils, vitamins, minerals). Eating his droppings could be a sign that he is missing nutrients or it may be a behavioural thing.

Like Myszka said you may need to feed more, every dog is different in their metabolic needs, the feeding amounts are the suggested levels, these need to be adjusted based on what your dog needs.

My dogs dont digest the grains from the VAN, but I never thought they are in the mix for the nutritional values. I believe they are there for raughage (sp?)

Most of dried foods main ingredient are grains, and as mentioned dogs dont digest grains well.

Daggles - I also think the beef and roo mince is not fat enough for the puppy, perhaps this is another reason why your dog is thin.

I would up his/her lamb flaps and chicken and see how the pupp goes.
