Brachycephalic Syndrome

I had my Peke Gillie's nostrils enlarged which was a fantastic improvement. As my vet said - Gillie now has a V8 exhaust  Before the surgery Gillie couldnt exercise very much without losing his breath and had problems with clearing congestion from his nose.

Gillies nostrils were done as a freebie when he was in for patella surgery.

I had a peke done last year - she had both laryngeal saccules removed and palate surgery and it cost around $1,000 but was well worth it.

Thanks

Was this done in Sydney?? Did she suffer any complications? What was the recovery time?

I know someone who had their bulldog done, I think it was nostrils and palate not sure about anything else, cost was around $1500 but there was a good improvement in the dog. No complications that I can remember, apparently it is quite a common operation for bulldogs, pugs, bostons etc. This was done by a specialist surgeon though not a normal vet.

Nope - in Hobart. The specialist came down from Sydney (she comes down every 6-8 weeks for surgeries in Hobart). No complications - most important thing is to keep them calm & cool (she actually had a bad back about the same time, so we had her restricted in a cot) Recovery time...we kept a very close eye on her for the first 24-48 hours, and other than a cough which she had for 4-5 days after the surgery, she was fine within a fortnight.

I have spoken with a specialist Vet who owns Pugs himself and has operated on them successfully for BS too. His quote was $2,000.

Thanks for this, I appreciate your repsonse. ;)

Have those of you who have had this surgery (or surgeries) done spoken to your breeder? If so, what was the reaction? This seems to me to be a hereditary problem, and if I had bred the dog, I would want to know - but I don't know a lot about it, so any enlightenment welcome. :)

I used to have a little CKCS that had problems with an elongated soft palate and everted laryngeal saccules. It was done by by Geraldine Hunt at the uni (while I was still a student) at that time I'm sure it was around the $800-$900 (including a biopsy of something else). She did seem a lot more comfortable and active after the surgery. The prices between specialists will vary considerably through Sydney :)

In this instance, for me, it is a rescue and while I do have her paperwork and know of the breeder I didn't feel inclined to speak with them. I understand also that this particular breeder is sick and no longer breeding. My understanding is that she has been made aware that the dog is in rescue and I am happy to leave it at that.

It does however support my stance on the issues in Pug breeding and this is only one example of the many that I have personally been involved with.

Thanks Rappie. This is good to know. As I said the other night, I need to have all of the information at ready for this little girl. Knowing that there are cheaper alternatives will help a great help. I will try to give them a call and speak to them.

  • 1 month later...

Update: I have managed to negotiate a deal with a Vet to have her surgery done for $500 and am just waiting to book her in. The current increase in temperature in Sydney has me worried as she is beginning to have difficulties already and we have only just reached the warmer temps!

I am in newcastle area and think this is a bit pricy.

Is there any other treatments to help them breathe better?
