Dog Clubs In North Brisbane (pine Rivers, Caboolture...)

Recommended Posts

I'm currently waiting for my Weim puppy to be born. (9 weeks can be so long :rolleyes: ) When he's with me, I will do puppy school and start with Obedience. Does anyone know 'Pine Rivers Obedience Club' in Strathpine? What are your opinions? Later one (once fully grown) I also like to do agility - maybe at PADS - anyone any experiences here? I'm also looking for a flyball and frisbee club on the northside or somewhere in Pine Rivers/Caboolture - any recommendations?

But as I'm getting a Weimaraner I'm highly interested in Gundog Field Trials, Tracking and Retrieving. Does anyone know some clubs around my area? Are there any good books about these sports as I'm an absolut Beginner for this sort of thing.

Any help is highly appreciated! Thank you!!!

I go to Pine Rivers currently with my boy for obedience, and have also taken pups through puppy preschool there. I have no complaints. All training is gentle and food rewards used. I think they do have flyball and agility, don't know about the others. Pine Rivers is very inexpensive in comparison also and classes not too big. I have heard Chermside (Metropolitan) is very good, though I have never been and I don't know much about them. I did go to PADS (Brendale) years ago. It was fun while in a large beginners group, but it got boring when we separated into sizes - we were at the top end of the small breeds at the time and in the minority. No doubt things have changed since I was there. I think alot depends on the trainer you have at the time also - I do tend to get bored if we are standing around waiting too much.

I was a member of Pine Rivers for years until I moved, and can recommend them. Training in puppies and lower classes is with food, clickers are OK. The also have an active flyball group for when your puppy is a bit older. They also do a bit of agility but I think only for dogs in level 3 or above. I also used to go to PADS years ago. They've moved to a fenced field since then (important when you've got a dog that takes itself off for a run :laugh: ). The only problem I did have there was that the classes seemed to be a bit close together. Suncoast Fundogs in Caboolture is better in that respect. They do a pre-agility course for young puppies, though if they're too young they can't actually go on to beginners agility.

As to retrieving, the United Field Trial Association for Gundogs Inc occasionally runs training courses (I've been on 2 over the years). There's also the Field & Retrieving Association for Gundogs. There's a couple of keen trackers in the Labrador Club, and they can also give you info about retrieving. Phone numbers are in the CCCQ mag.

There's a frisbee club (canine disc I think they they call it) in Caboolture. I think the website is bark.assn.au.

I'm thinking field trials are possibly defunct in Qld now that quail shooting has been banned, but retrieving trials are still being held.

The Frisbee club is Brisbane and Region K 9 Disc Club

www.bark.asn.au

We have Training clinic's and Competitions all around Brisbane and you can come along any time for a look, you can also join in the if you like to learn how to throw the Disc and how to get your puppy interested in the Disc.

Please feel free to check out the web site for more information :rofl:

Bonnies has one two of their instructors who hold puppy classes from 8 weeks at Strathpine. It is held at a private residence on Monday nights I believe from memory. They are in behind Samsonvale Road and Kremzow Road around there. I have the address at home somewhere. It is also on Bonnies website. You pay per night. It used to be around $10/class. They are really good as apart from Vetinary surgeries CCCQ affiliated clubs do not accept puppies until they are 12 weeks of age. Personally I think this too old. I understand their perspective of all three vaccinations etc. But IMHO I believe to socialise them as early as possible in controlled circumstances.

Another of one of Bonnies Instructors hold obedience classes at the Pine Rivers Show grounds on a Thursday night. Des Strong is a long time obedience trialler and also trains/instructs at Caboolture Dog Club.

It has been years and years since I have trained at Pine Rivers so cannot comment on what their current classes are like.

Thanks very much for all your replies! Looking forward to start obedience training with my pup!

Unfortunately I'm not a member of the CCCQ yet and from their webpage I cannot get any infos about retrieving and tracking...

@Mysticview: What club is the one which trains at the PR Showgrounds? I'm keen to trial in obedience therefore looking for a really good club/instructor.

Thanks everyone!

I go to Metro ( http://www.metrodogclub.com ) and it is brilliant. It offers puppy school, obedience and agility once your dog gets to a certain obedience level. It's right near Westfield Chermsie, on monday nights. All the info is on the website :laugh: I have seen a few Weis there too :rolleyes:

It is part of Bonnies who are primarily based at THE GAP. I have been training with them now for about 12 years.

I would definately look into some private puppy school between the age of 8 weeks and 12 weeks when the cccq affilliated clubs (Pine Rivers, Metro, Caboolture etc) can then take on your training. As said previously, they do not accept puppies before 12 week vaccination as part of the CCCQ rulings. And in my personal opinion, much happens between 8-12 weeks including a fear period that I think is more risky regarding unsocialisation than compared to parvo.

Sure have to be careful with parvo and Kennel Cough (common sense prevails - no off lead parks until fully vaccinated), but unsocialised or poorly socialised dogs also get killed..

Thanks guys! I highly appreciate your effort! The Vet here in Dayboro offers Pre-Puppy Classes, so I will book him in there. I just hope they'll be happening as I'm getting my boy mid-December and that's close to school holiday... :o

Well, let's wait and see...

I will go to theses clubs and have a look beforehand so I then can decide which one we will go to. I drive 110kms to and from work every day - I really like to have something closeby.

If you go to Metro make sure you come and say hello - I am usually there with daisy the tan and white beagle but occassionally I will take Micha my sibe (he is a BIG sibe) :) I'm the youngish girl with brown hair and I'm short :D

oceanaussi,

If you are up in Dayboro, just dont go to the advertised obedience classes down in samford. Heard nothing good about it. Think it being held by some private person behind the farmers hall.

I am down most Monday nights at Metro as well. Moved back to northside a few months ago..

  • 3 months later...

My boy was born on Tuesday night :eek: and now it's getting serious!

I will have a closer look at following obedience training classes:

* Pine Rivers Obedience Club

* Pine Agility Dog Sports Club

* Caboolture Sports Dob Obedience Club

* Redcliffe Dog Obedience Club

* Teamwork Dog Obedience

There's also puppy training in Dayboro available and I think I will do that and take him somewhere else for the next level.

We've discussed a few of these clubs here before but I was wondering if anyone went to Teamwork Dog Obedience? They sound really good and they're on different locations. I like the possibility to take my dog to different training locations. Anbody here with any experience on Teamwork Dog Obedience?

I've used both Dayboro and Pine Rivers. I would strongly recommend Pine Rivers over Dayboro for puppy preschool. If you do go to Dayboro my advice is do not let them scruff your dog.

Sorry, may I asked what you mean with "do not let them scruff your dog"? I'm not familiar with the term "scruff", doesn't that mean taking him on the neck?

Yes. From what I have seen they lift the puppy completely off the ground and release it when the puppy stops screaming and becomes submissive. Now this is a stranger to your puppy doing this on the first meeting. For me in my mind that reinforces in a puppy not to trust strangers. But that's just my opinion and I'm certainly not a dog trainer.

Pine Rivers do not use that method of training.
