no_fear5100
Hi guys, I am really concerned abt my female chi x Jack russell's food. She is more than 5 months old btw. I got her from pet paradise where they recommended me feeding my pup the Revolution and I dont know why my pup ended up having diaries from them food. I changed my mind, try to something else called Nutrition (I think the name spelled like like), my pup didnt seem to to enjoy the food any better. After that, I decided to get her the hill for puppy. So I fed her the hill dry food and advanced wet food. She loved it, She finished a 2kg bag in about a month. But when I come back for some more (I bought from a VET in Toorak in Victoria) They ran out of advanced wet food I got her The hill wet food. Jesus Chris... My pup hates it so bad. She only touch the food when she is really hungry. I think she has no problem with diet cause I tried feeding her white rice with chicken, she finished in no time. I thought of come back using the hill and advanced we food but I think they are not from the same brand, so they could not be balanced together. Btw, is it wrong that i still feeding my pup with wet food? When should I stop doing it? If the dry food doesnt come with wet food, my pup would never touch it. I just wondering if any of u guys could help me to find a healthy and enjoyable food for my pup. Thanks HEAPSSSSS!!!!!
laffi
You should start using dry food ASAP. Wet food is 80% water The good brands of dry food are Nutro, Nutrience, Eagle Pack Hollistic, Royal Canin... Anything that works for your dog is a good food. You can also prepare her food. If you want to try this, look into BARF diet (do a search on this forum).
Gomez the Norfolk
One more brand to look into is Dick VanPatten's Natral Balance - all holitic and organic - very good quality food This one is available at the Macro in Richmond, which is not too far from you if you're going to the vet in Toorak - the foods mentioned above are available at the PetStock in South Melbourne market. The fact that two foods are not form the same brand does not mean they are not compatible - but the brands you mentioned, Hills, Science Diet, Advance, they are not so great. Look into getting a good quality dry food and see how that goes - switch over slowly, mixing in a bit of the old food with the new food over a period of about a week. APBT Lover
Hi, I would recomend feeding a BARF diet as long as you do your research, I use a BARF diet with my girl and she has never been in better health, and she loves it. Florise
If I were you I'd buy some RAW chickens necks or wings and feed them (RAW -do not cook them) whole as a supplement to whatever dry food you are using. There are many good dry brands available, and it's just a matter of finding the one she likes best and seems healthiest on. Advance is a good food and she likes it, so why not stick with that one? Make it the main part of her diet and add some raw bones and vegies for variety.. it's also good for her to have some raw carrots, or apple pieces (no seeds) to chew on. Good for teething to to help her baby teeth to come out I would avoid feeding wet tinned food as it is mostly water and won't clean her teeth or be nearly as enjoyable for her as raw bones. Stick with the Advance dry food but find a pet supply place to buy it from. Look in the Yellow pages to find a place near to you, or alternatively there are places like www.petspantry.com.au you can ring them up and they will deliver it to your home. They stock Eagle Pack, Pro Plan, and other good brands. It's very expensive to buy it from a vet clinic. I agree you should add some raw chicken necks and wings, and other raw bones to make his diet more enjoyable and natural.
Prydenjoy
I think she has no problem with diet cause I tried feeding her white rice with chicken, she finished in no time. Oh please tell me that was a one off! I know lots of dogs who will ONLY eat chicken and rice because they "wouldn't eat" anything else so their owners just started feeding them the one thing they would eat, chicken and rice, and this stayed their diet for their whole life. There are a number of deficincies that can arise from this diet, besides, a pup will eat if it is hungry enough!! Good on you though for being prepared to spend the extra money buying premium foods for your dog... Even if it wont eat them
no_fear5100
Hi Guys, Tks so much for all the advices above. I took my pup to the VET on the other day cause she was having a kind of allergy, weather or environment allergy. The vet gave me some Royal Canin and my pup seems to like it. I just wonder how do you get the dog to eat dry food only? How do you actually do that without the pup being left empty stomach? I just could not stand the thinking of my dog does not eat anything for the whole day. I know what u might thinking of me but... Pls help!!!!!!! LOVELY NEWSSS!!!! I am getting a jack russell x maltese this sun day. He is only about 8 weeks old and the owner is still feeding her some kind of canned milk. they are not registed breeders but they seem nice and care for their pups. They had him vaccinated last week. I just wonder what should I feed the pup? canned milk? and Wat kind would be good for him? Or should I feed him dry food for pups and wet food? I am so excited and so looking forward to sunday. My lucky will have a friend to play with. And he is half jack russell, too. So hope they will get along fine. PLS HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Regards to everyone ^^ Edited September 10, 2007 by no_fear5100
Kobayashi
I started mixing some raw type meats into willow's dry food and the bowl went in 2 minutes This was after a few times where she would barely touch her dry food alone. I try to give her a variety of fresh stuff to get her tummy used to the different meats. So far anything meaty is gulped down, lol. Even the barf style lamb/vege/rice patty stuff got swallowed down without much prodding. I think she just likes having something other then dry food to eat. Nekhbet
canned milk for an 8 week old? holy jeezus do they feed it anything else? Remember your new pup needs another 2 vaccinations and remember that you need to socialise this new pup as much as possible in the next couple of months, especially around children and loud noises. stick to the Royal Canin, its the best quality on the market and perfect for small dogs. Dont panic, you seem to be worrying too much about your pups diet. Dry food can be fed multiple times a day, your pup is not going to starve. Feed a little for breakfast, a little for lunch and then maybe a chicken neck for dinner. The same diet for the new puppy too. Wet food is over rated. The only reason I use dog milk is if my dogs look a little thin and need fat. At that age I see no reason for it, the puppy is weaned. Dry food, fresh meaty necks for nutrition and clean water at all times. Healthy, happy puppies. If they DONT want to eat it (and Royal Canin is rarely rejected) just persist. Pups are like toddlers, they refuse just to push your buttons and get their own way, but no puppy will starve itself. Dont leave the pups with a bowl full of food all day to graze either, you'll end up with fat pups or fussy eaters. You are the leader, you control the food. Prydenjoy
Stick with the Royal Canin for both pups. Fill a bowl up, put it down and let the pups eat (seperate bowls may be necessary), 5 minutes later pick it up and put it away. Do this 4 or 5 times a day while they are really small, reducing to 2 meals a day by the time they finish growing. They'll soon learn that if they don't eat in their "window" they wont have any food until the next meal. Don't fold and offer meals between meals, or when the pup begs for it. Stick to certain times and they will learn pretty quickly. I've been slack with Chino and left his and Monties food out until they ate it, they'd pick at it and it would sit there all day. Then I decided to toughen up and offer them 4 meals a day (Montie is an adult, but he chooses only to eat twice a day anyway) and each time I put the bowl down Chino digs in. Montie is actually eating better now too. Many people choose to leave food out all day, but from a training perspective this isn't the best method. When you offer a dog food, and make it sit before it eats, you are controlling its resources, and it sees you as a leader. If they always have food there they think it is their entitlement and you mean less to them as you are not controlling the vital resources. Also, some dogs get fat on this method of feeding because they'll over eat, others will get skinny (like Montie did) because they are a bit fussy and only have a few bites here and there until they aren't hungry and not eat much. If you offer them a set number of meals a day they are generally hungry at meal times and will eat, especially if their unfinished food gets taken away. Also, set meal times can make house training easier, as a general rule pups will go to the toilet after eating, if they nibble and snack all day you don't get that opportunity to go outside and praise them for going when you know they will. no_fear5100
Hi again, thank you again for all the great advices from you guys. Ben, my other puppy IS HOME. Iam so happy. I think I will give royal cannin a try. My vet gave me a sample in the other day, it seems great. @Nekhbet: Milk is the drink they give the pups, they feed them the wet food chicken and rice for pup from coles. His stool stinks so bad and it's kindda yellow and wet. I am changing it to the hill that i am feeding my other pup at the moment. His stool getting better. But again, I will change to royal cannin and hope it will be my last stop. @jeanne: Thanks for the advice. I am trying to follow to what u say. My pups are doing really well. It's funny. Yesterday I fed both of them. Ben finished his food first, Lucky has been spoiled for so long so she is a bit fussy. But the second Ben started tasting Lucky's food which I wasnt quick enough to stop him but it turned out to be a good thing. Lucky came up and finished her food really fast. I think she afraid of Ben would eat her food, too lolz... Anyway, THANK HEAPSSSSSSSS for all the helps. I am really happy that i found this website. Hopefully you guys wouldnt mind for all the silly question from a newbie like me ^^
Prydenjoy
Glad to hear all is well! Keep us posted on how they do on the Royal Canin. It's great to see improvements in a new pup when you get it and improve it's diet. Chino was being fed cat food before I got him and it was great to see his tear stains disappear, his energy levels pick up and his coat get softer after changing his diet
monosylabik
well done for being a responsible, caring dog owner and researching food for your dogs! good luck. remember to give them big meaty bones to chew on, it cleans their teeth. be sure to never cook bones, esp chicken. raw only or cooked meat bone free. raw is best, as the others have said above. no_fear5100
Hi guys!!!! Yeah!!! i've got Royal Cannin this afternoon for my dearest pups. The second I got home, I tried the food right away. I think it's fantastic. Ben the 8 week old boy seems to like it so much. He finished the meal even without wet food. with Lucky my 6 month old girl, i think it's even better. She ate the whole thing without wet food as well. I will give them another meal tonight but I think I am the happiest owner in the world. ROYAL CANNIN ROCKS!!! @Monosylabik: I was thinking of giving my pups some raw meaty bone, too. But I was advised that not to give the pups anymore raw meat while feeding them Royal Cannin. I think raw meat is a great idea but still, Could you guys please advice me what's best for the pups? I would really appreciate ^^ Hope to hear from you real soon ^^,)
Poodle wrangler
Some people say brands like RC are a "complete food" and feeding other things somehow makes their diet unbalanced. I don't agree and like to feed some raw food, too. With things like pet mince, you don't know what you're getting + preservatives, but I don't think you can go far wrong with some chicken necks (deli section of many supermarkets) for pups- they chew the bones up and swallow them. I also feed brisket bones sometimes. It's a sad day when it's "wrong" to give your dog a bone
Prydenjoy
remember to give them big meaty bones to chew on, it cleans their teeth *Insert mental image of itty bitty puppy chewing on big meaty bone* ;) The general rule is that you can feed 10% extras ontop of a regular dried food, chicken wings are great. It is true that if you substitute too much of their meals with meaty bones or whatever else you could cause some imbalances, without properly researching how to balance their diet outside their kibble. If you were to give them the occasional chicken liver and a bit of mashed veggies it would balance out the occasional wing a little bit. There is a lot of info out there on the web about preparing home made meals etc, but without thorough research it's a good idea to stick to the 10% rule, the last thing you want is to accidentally give them an imbalance while trying to do the best by them ;) Perhaps you could give them half a wing each 2 or three times a week? They are easy to chop in half with a sharp knife. I steer clear of necks, heard of too many dogs choking on them and it makes me nervous! :D
no_fear5100
Hahhaa... Yeah as i mentioned it Jeane, I am imaging how my pups chew up a big meaty bone. But I will sure try out the chicken wings, It does seem to be a safe option since my pups are still little. Lucky likes eating apple, carrot and even capsicum as well so hope Ben will be the same so their diet could be balanced ;) btw, the dinner turned out pretty good for Ben. He finished his meal of royal cannin dry food only in no time and I did not add any wet food at all. This made me really happy and there is a bright future that Ben will not be like Lucky, being a fussy eater. But Lucky did not finish her food T_T and I will not give her any wet food tonight even she did not finish her meal. Hopefully tomorrow she will be too hungry to be fussy :D Tks for the advice and I will keep you guys update about the pups' diet ^^
no_fear5100
hi guys, Just some update about the pups diet as promised. Royal canin is the best. Ben never leave his food behind, I feed him 3 times a day and he enjoy his meal every single time. With Lucky, she was still fussy until I got her desexed. The vet advice to feed her soft food only for the first few days and only by a little. I thing becaused of that, Lucky was left hungry so i fed her dry food only the first time in 5 days after she got desexed. She digged in and finish the dry food in no time. Since then, she's been eating dry food only twice a day hehehe... Btw, I gave my pups their first chicken wing in their lives this afternoon. I chopped it in a half and hammered it a bit. They absolutely loved it. But i am still a bit concern about the bones. I know that with chicken bone after they chew it could be broken in small pieces and they could be very sharp. Would it be dangerous for the pups? the neck and the wing, which one is better? Hope to hear the valuable advice from u guys soonest
