Very Tired.... New Pup Is A Toilet Machine...

I worked full time when my boy was a pup and he survived on 2 meals a day. I just gave him a bigger breakfast than dinner.

Regarding the toileting at night....I had this same issue. My boy was not in a crate but he did used to wake me up to go outside to the toilet. He would have his quick 'wee' then come back inside and go back to sleep until the morning. He probably did this up until he was 5 months old (mind you, we only got him at 4 months) when we went on holiday overseas (was planned way before the dog came along...please don't shoot me!) and he stayed with a lovely lady who also has OES's. She knew that he was going to the toilet once at night, and basically said to me....NOT ANYMORE! She just stopped doing it, and he learned that way that he would have to stay in at night and hold on till morning. We have NEVER EVER had a problem with him!

So I guess what I am saying is, reduce the times per night you take the dog out, until you don't have to anymore.

If she makes a whoopsy don't yell at her....only if you catch her in the act

GOOD LUCK

Thanks for the advise everyone.

Last night I did some hard love and she only went once a 3.30am and the other whins were ignored successfully. If she can keep that up maybe on Saturday I will try and she if she will hold all night.

Very good girl last night I feel vaugely human this morning... :hitself:

I can understand that you don't want to feed, then exercise/ play with pup, but will feeding later result in poos at night? Depends how late last toileting is, I guess.

Great idea about 'lunch' in a chew toy.

There's loads of different ideas about preventing bloat. There's a study here (standard poodles can get it, too- large dog, deep chest): http://www.poodlesinaustralia.com/health/health18.html.

Basically- use common sense e.g. you don't exercise after a large meal, why do it to the dog? And seek urgent vet attention ASAP if any sign of it. We lost a boxer to bloat, but I was much younger and none of our family recognised the signs :hitself:.

Lovely pup .

ETA: I was a bit lazy with our pup and put him outside to sleep from 9 weeks. Mind you, he's got his own in-built warm coat and he was a "summer-autumn" pup.

Hi, Your puppy is gorgeous! :hitself:

I think she is too young to start with only 2 meals especially if you don't give her dinner to late thats she would be very hungry by then.

I would feed her a small meal when you get home from work and then give her extra later that night.

You shouldn't have to worry about bloat at this stage as she shouldn't having heaps of exercise anyway. Bloat can be caused by giving your dog heaps of exercise or running around before or after they eat a large meal. It is better to feed them up off the ground as well.

For the first 12 months of your dogs life she needs controlled walks not long exhausting walks as it is better for her hips and joints as she will be growing at a rapid rate. Try not let her jump down off things it hard because they are just big puppies but can easily hurt themselves.

I read in another thread about someone who puts food hidden all over the garden while they are at work as well as in kongs etc to keep her doggies active I thought it was great idea. You would have to have a seach for the thread sorry

Good Luck

Jasmine is so gorgeous....

Haha.. LOL.. i can feel your pain. I just have my new puppy as well who is happen to be the most gorgeous and well behave puppy. The first week i got her when she was 8 1/2 weeks, i hardly get any sleep at all... my mind keep in alert for her. she sleeps with me in a crate or sometimes on my bed with me.

After a week, her sleeping pattern getting better. i fed her 4x a week cause she is quite a big bubba and loves her food. but i can't feed her a bit too much, it's upsetting her tummy.

Usually she didn't give me any signs when she wanna do toilet, but i am getting better pick up her sniffing sound or when she start getting restless.

First week i got her, i came to work looked like a zombie... never have enough sleep at all. I can't wait for the time to able to hold on and let me know when she needs to go but in other hand i want to enjoy her being a puppy.

anyway congratulation for you new baby.

cheers

hi,

i can understand your dilemma. Our gsd pup is 13wks old and we stopped her 3 meals cos we had to go to work too, so she gets one at 6.30am then 5.30pm and has a kong during the day. She still needs to go during the night and to stop bloat we soak her eukanuba puppy lg breed in warm water before giving it to her like the breeder use to do.. im hoping she will learn to hold on as she gets older, goodluck!!

Thanks everyone for your replies.

For the past three nights (Wed/Thur/Fri) she has held all night from 10pm to 6am - what a good puppy!! Without making a noise once she initially settles - key was our mini grandfather clock that has a good tick-tock...

Last night we moved the crate from our bedroom to the lounge room, she whined for about 15 mins before settling for the whole night.

Back to work Monday and we are hoping she maintains her great record!

I have stopped the basic training (for now - except K's TOT) and now only give her treats when she goes to her crate. two treats just before bedtime and during the day today she has entered 3 times without prompting.

A&D
