mocha
I have got 2 mini poodles 3 weeks ago (momo and chacha) from 2 different breeders. Momo is now 16 weeks old and Chacha is 12 weeks. They are doing great since the first night...they sleep in the same crate, play together and eat using the same bowls. However, when I separate them, Chacha cries like crazy...... any suggestion to improve this situation? i want chacha to know that there is no problem for her to stay in the home just by herself. Also, sometimes, they bark to each other, is this okay? Thanks

I would feed them separately and take each of them out for some time on their own each day.. build up to over an hour if you can. It sounds like the younger pup is very dependent on the other. Make time apart for each of them enjoyable at first. Take one out and leave the other with something tasty to chew. Train them separately and teach them to walk separately. Dogs bonded too closely can be a real challenge to manage apart. Personally, I'd have recommended against getting two pups so close together in age as they tend to bond more to each other than you. You need to build a bond to each of them that doesn't involve the other and only separating them can do it. Ignore the crying. Crate Chacha, leave her with a treat and leave with Momo.. for a few minutes at first then build up from there. mocha
Thanks. I will start crating her tonight. I got 2 pups at the same time because I want them to have a little playmate when I am not at home... Actually, I am quite happy to see them bonding together. I saw some websites saying it is very hard to grow 2 pups at the same time but I don't really think so...(maybe because they are poodles???)...anyway, I will teach them about independence from tonight

If you haven't considered taking them to obedience training, I'd strongly urge you to think about it. Once they get out of their baby stage, mini P's are very active dogs that need plenty of mental AND physical stimulation. Some kind of dog sport (all based in part on basic obedience training) is the ideal way to keep your pups entertained. Incidentally, I'd be quietly discouraging any barking.. this can be a noisy breed. Edited August 20, 2007 by poodlefan

All dogs have to be trained, two mini poodles are going to be very active and if you dont train them theyll get up to lots of mischief and you wont be able to do anything with them. mocha
Thank you for warning me, really appreciate that. I started the basic training since last week by following "its me or the dog" suggestions and now looking for a solution for the barking/yelling problem...but they only bark to each other when they are playing...how do i avoid that? they never bark to strangers or other dogs...or even when we are not at home. is that still a behavioural problem? I'd simply distract them or ask them to "hush" and reward them when they are quiet. It's not a behavioural 'problem' so much Mocha as simply behaviour you don't want to encourage. It's normal, just noisy. I'd really encourage you to take these pups to a training.. they are smart, learn quickly and benefit from the social experience of group training. Can they still join the puppy school? how much does it usually cost?
JAG
Oh boy!!! You are in for a real treat!!! I agree with everything PF has said to you. It isn't now you will have issues - it is down the track. You are already experiencing the start of trouble. One crying after the other one.... These dogs need their independence from each other, they time alone, they need your one on one attention and they need training. If you do not start to become the pack leader these two dogs will walk all over you I'm afraid.. You won't stop them barking at each other when playing - that is what it is. You will need to get on top of the crying when one is out of sight of the other, barking when people come to your house. This may not be evident now but when the dogs get older and become possessive of the house because it is theirs then this will start. The barking will then be when they can see someone near the house, a dog goes, a bird is on the front lawn by etc etc. Not many poodles can resist a bark at those types of things. Please excuse my bluntness here but I hope you are planning on getting your puppies desexed when the time is right as it sounds like you have one male and one female. poodlefan
Mocha "puppy school" is usually a bit like pre-kindy for pups.. lots of socialisation, tips for new owners but not full on. You could look to finding the nearest community based club in your area or there are excellent privately run ones. These take dogs pretty much from 3 months of age and some train towards dog sports.. others help people mould their dogs into good canine citizens. Where are you located? We may be able to suggest somewhere.

I go to Werribee and it does have a class for puppies and young dogs. They are a large club, and run all different dog sports and obedience classes. I would suggest you go to an induction day, where you can ask all of your questions and get heaps of info, then you can decide whether you would like to join, but I would highly suggest it http://www.werribeeobediencedogs.org/

mocha
momo is white and chacha is silver...they are cute but I haven't got a chance to transfer the photos into the computer. Will post it later... i started crating them separately last night and they only cried for a few minutes then slept. does it mean they are learning it? but when I am at work, i just leave them at my backyard with a lot of toys and pig ears...is it okay? BC, thank you for your suggestion, I am going to call the werribee club tonight. really look forward to attending the class with them.
