I LOVED Susan Garrett: Shaping Success!

also The other end of the leash... wasnt going to read this one as it was old  but my training friend recommended it and I ended up really enjoying it!!! Had some seriously interesting stuff in there!!! (perhaps my fav bit was the constant ref to different studies done on stuff - one being the domestication of foxes where it ended up being that white patches and floppy ears developed and were inherited along with a more outgoing temperament!)

Time to resurrect this thread with a new favourite.

Have just finished watching all 4 DVD's from Susan Salo's Jump Foundation Training. Awesome

And for those of you who are as 'blonde' as me and took 9 pages of notes while watching - DVD number 4 includes training notes. All the related articles published in Clean Run, plus another 25 pages from Salo herself which is a run down of everything on the DVD's with diagrams, measurement tables, etc.

(Insert DVD into computer, right click the icon for it in My Computer, then click explore and you are given a whole list of PDF files.)

So now I have my own little booklet as well as the DVD's. With this option they were well worth the expense.

Anyone else seen them and what did you think?

Go on, do it ! You know you want to !

The other thing that I loved about it was for some of the more advanced grids there is footage of dogs 'getting it wrong' so you can see how she fixes it.

I taped my dogs doing one of the grids and will post it - as soon as I can figure out how !

well rain held off for us on Saturday for our Jumping workshop not to be cancelled... what a great day.. i have previously attended Cathy's Susan Salo jump grid workshops, but Sat just put everything back into perspective... i was able to work my young puppy, 8 months old throughout the day... It was great for everyone attending to see how a puppy can learn to read ahead and cope with the challenges set... only jump bumps were used for him as he is still only a baby even at 8 months.. it is quite a mentally challenging thing for our dogs to do, and am sure all dogs were mentally fatigued at the end of the day...

and yes while i was there i purchased a copy of the Susan Salo DVD's, have watched parts of it, will watch the rest today as it is raining and i have decided to have the day off work...

but from what i have seen thus far, and from the workshops i have attended about the jump grids i would have to rate it with

to purchase your copy check it out at

Are controlled unleashed and the crate training DVD good for beginner training with my 12 week pup and my 11 month pup?

Control unleashed is fairly indepth stuff

Crate Games are perfect another suggestion is Shaping Success by Susan Garett has some great puppy games to play suitable for dogs of all ages really... Greg Derrett foundation Agility... even if your not planning on agility has some great relationship building stuff in there...

I LOVE "Competition Obedience - A balancing act". It explains everything the best I've read.

I am going to add it to my wish list :D

Did you find it more useful than Morgan Spector's book?

I have, yep. I don't know why exactly, just the way it's written makes things feel easier to train and plan for the training. It's similar in some ways, it has foundation skills to be learnt first and so on. I think it's an individual thing though - I don't really like using pure shaping or targetting that much and so Morgan's book doesn't totally suit me.
