Gagging Whilst Or After Eating

Edward has been doing gagging like he has a furball stuck after he eats, like he is choking but he can still breathe.

He isnt eating very fast anymore and has plenty of fresh water but sometimes he will cough up a little food or gag like he is going to throw up.

His food is not elevated, would putting it up higher help?

I have seperated his meals into 4 tiny portions to make sure he doesnt scoff but other than that I am out of ideas

any ideas please

thanks

Lauren

What breed of dog is Edward?

I would take a guess at the possibilty of palate or laryngeal issues. The food could be getting caught under the flap of the palate or it could be getting caught due to layngeal paralysis or a growth. It could also be due to inflammation or infection.

The best advice is to have him looked at by a Vet.

Newfie. I can't see the old pics, though.

Does he do this at any other time? My dog sounded like this in the early stages of kennel cough. Was more like an attempt to vomit than a cough.

People used to elevate food, thinking it would help prevent bloat, but there's no evidence (I'm aware of) that it really does help.

As Puggles suggested please get him checked by a vet, this is exactly what Victoria used to do with her Laryngeal Paralysis (apparently common in giant breeds).

Please let us know how you go, hopefully it's just a minor irritation

This has happened to our pup too. Exactly as you decribed, like a cat trying to cough up a furball!

Although it's not generally when he's eating it can just be random, and not often, maybe about 6 times all up in the time we have had him?

And it generally only lasts for about 30 seconds, if that.... After he does it he is 100% fine, although it's horrible to watch as he is in a lot of discomfort when it happens..

He has done it once in the last week or so, once it woke him up from sleeping.. I didn't realise it could be something really serious?... If it's even the same thing..

How often does it happen to your dog?

Let me know how it goes at the vet if you take him?

I am going to ring his breeder first, OH just pointed out to me it seems to happen when he is going through a growth spurt and you can see that his face is changing so I want to check with her first, other than that it will be a vet trip as it scared the hell out of me, he is fine though

He only ever does it whilst or directly after eating. I can think where he would have picked up kennel cough

Dru, I hadnt heard of that one. The vet I use is used to the giant breeds so he should know though

thanks
