madmummy
hello all, Our new little puppy Molly Kidney is a KC Cavalier spaniel. She is 10wks old and going really well. I have been following my breeders instructions with all aspects of Molly, but have been told i am not feeding her well (not by breeder). Wondered if i could get your opinions. Breakfast: weetbix with puppy milk Lunch: dry food (optimum puppy brand) with either mince(chicken or beef) OR chicken necks Dinner: same as lunch but i rotate mince/necks so she only gets one lot per day. she also gets on brussel sprouts and carrots.. raw and uncut. Oh and for treats we have some puppy biscuits and yesterday she had a dried pigsnout..she loved this although i think GROSS lol. Thanks in advance for all your advice/opinions, Molly ismy first ever puppy .... I have 5 kids but that doesn't REALLY prepare you lol. KitKat
I'd probably soak the puppy milk with puppy kibble for the breakfast rather then the wheatbix only because the wheatbix has little nutritional value to a dog. and perhaps not use brussel sprouts as it may make the pup fart...lol. Carrots are great as a treat - kinda like a bone but if it isn't processed (mulched/blended etc) the dog won't easily digest it. Same as with the sprouts. But in general...i don't think there is anything really wrong with the diet you are feeding...if the breeder was happy with it and you are happy with it...and most importantly the pup is happy and healthy...well... madmummy
Thanks Kitkat. I haven't given her the carrot yet, but i give the brussell sprouts prob every couple of days (just one) and she does do any smellies lol. What is puppy kibble?. I noticed my woolies now has something called puppy porridge, was wondering if this may be better than the weetbix?. forgot to mention i DO NOT cook any of her meats, is this ok? I buy top mince from my butcher. Jen
KitKat
Yup...uncooked everything is the way to go Kibble is a generalised term many use for dry dog food - 'kibble' used to be a brand of dry food but i don't think it is available any more - but the term got adopted...lol. The puppy porridge isn't bad...but the slightly soaked kibble would still be better. One of my pups loved the puppy porridge...unfortunately it went straight thru the other dog! We were told by our breeder to feed: Breakfast: raw chicken mince(with the whole carcass ground up) and tucker time Lunch: Puppy biscuits (we chose natural balance) Dinner: same as breakfast They said to add in table scraps such as left over veggies, rice, pasta from 16weeks onwards, feed raw lamb shanks, chickens wings etc... I'm not sure if thats an ok diet, i'm still figuring it out
Poodle wrangler
Everyone has different ideas about diet . Someone's bound to say they've fed their dog Chum canned food all its life and it lived to 103! It's as bad as all the advice people give you about babies, LOL. Best advice I had was to look at your pup: Clear eyes, shiny coat, energetic, poo normal (not huge, loose or excessive amounts), healthy weight. If she's all that, pat yourself on the back and keep up the good work . What was suggested as a better diet? THe raw veges aren't digestible. I wouldn't feed weetbix and puppy milk, but that's just my opinion and if it's causing no problem, go ahead. One of my dogs likes to clean up the kid's weetbix and he's still alive, with good teeth. Mince and chicken necks sound excellent. Dry food- OMG Can of worms, there. Feed what you can afford, if its more convenient and practical. I don't like dog biscuits that stick to dog's teeth. Not much nutrition there, either. If you did decide to change her diet, do so slowly over several days, mixing old with new until it's all the new diet. Tapferhund
Dump the weetbix as they have no nutritional value at all for the pup and i wouldn't bother with the milk either. Vary the pups diet by feeding a good quality dry food.....minced chicken necks or carcasses(something with bone) and not just minced meat only ....juiced raw vegies or cooked ones like carrot, spinach ,parsley, silverbeet etc but NO onion or potatoes. Maybe an egg yolk once a week......a little natural yogurt a day etc. You can feed some fruits too like apple or banana but NEVER feed grapes or dried fruits. Basically give the pup various foods just make sure he gets plenty of raw meaty bones such as the minced necks while he is young and then on to whole chicken necks as he gets older. Cute puppy BTW ! Static'sMum
we used to feed Static his dog biscuits soaked in hot water, with some puppy milk mixed in when he was a small pup. He loved it (although he got half on his face, half in his mouth as he was a very messy eater!) We still give Static puppy milk now (he is almost 9 months), and I don't plan on stopping as he loves it. Being winter and cold (obviously) and that he is an outside dog, I give him warm puppy milk - about 200mls - every morning before his biscuits. He sits there and licks his lips until he gets it, and then when finished he picks up his milk bowl and puts it at the back door for more!!! although he never gets more. We too fed him raw carrots and frozen green beans when he was small (as it was summer) although the carrots always passed undigested - it was better for him to chew them, than other things. Angelblaze112
Can I feed my 12 week old CKCS whole chicken necks? Will they benefit her? All I am feeding her at the moment is Science diet puppy small bites, should i be giving her other stuff? She seems to be happy and has a shiny coat on it. KitKat
If youa re happy with your pup on Hills...and she is doing well on Hills...then stick with it  And whole chook necks are fine...just keep an eye on her incase she tries to inhale them etc...lol. If you are unsure to start with crush the necks a bit so they are easier for her to chew etc ;)
Yoshi&Kaiser
We feed our puppy twice daily now. Breakfast is either the puppy porridge (both him and the older one love it) vegimite on toast (when Im running late to work I cook him a bit alongside mine!) or weatbix with milk. Dinner is now supercoat with fresh dog mince (beef or chicken) and vegies and/or pasta. I just buy a bag of no name frozen vegies, heat some up in the microwave, use the warm water to soak the kibble and then mix it with the meat. I also keep some of those meat rolls in the fridge if I have a busy night and also for variety. Dogs, like people need a balanced diet with variety. becks
My pups are on 4 meals a day until about 3-4 months old. But everyone is different! If your pup looks well with what you are feeding, then don't worry!
Angelblaze112
Thanks for that guys. i might get her some chookie necks and see if she likes them.
Gretel
Yep chicken necks are usually pretty popular! Just always watch to be sure they chew them properly and don't swallow whole. Lola did chew them well but when she was teething and her mouth was sore she starting swallowing without chewing and nearly choked on one. I'd love to know where the name Molly Kidney came from Too cute! BTW They are Cavalier King Charles Spaniels not King Charles Cavalier Spaniels....... madmummy
hello everyone, Thanks for all the replies, its great to get everyones opinions. Im still feeding 3times a day but switched the weebix for the dried food, added some bones..which she loves and reduced her chicken intake (gross poop lol). So she has a variety of fresh minces...chick, lamb and beef . Gretel....oooo you want the name story?? lol its a goodie. we have bought Molly mainly for ONE of our children, not that she isn't shared amongst all 5... lets face it im not buying them each a puppy lol. Matilda is our 3.5yr old daughter and she recently had half her left kidney removed, she has had issues with her kidneys since she was born, even spending some time when she was 9mths old on dialysis. Now in the lead up to hr BIG op she kept on telling us about how she was getting a Pet and her DR... DR F was giving her a PET... we just couldn't understand where she was getting this from. One afternoon she said it again and we stopped and spoke with her about it until it dawned on us.... her 'kidney' is a 'kitney"....she thought she was having a PET removed not a KIDNEY lmao. Dh is totally not a CAT person so a puppy it was. Pretty sure she got this idea because I was pregnant. She got to meet Molly just before her surgery and she took photos of her to hospital in a little album, it really helped to get her through her recovery. So anyway, she was named for the organ that matilda believes she was . here is a pic..its not a great one sorry... its my DH with matilda, molly and our baby Scarlett. bb
2cavs
Molly kidney is gorgeous. We fed our two CKCS pretty similar to what you have changed to. We use to get Advance puppy (small breed) and soak in hot water and mix with mince, or a chicken wing/neck.
