Chipper
My 16 month old male German Shepherd has just had xrays on his hips. The results came back okay but upon physical examination there was some laxity in his left hip which clicks upon manipulation. This was the reason why I took him in the first place (i heard the clicking one day while walking). I am curious to find out what supplements other people use for their dogs. At this stage, he's showing no signs of pain or lameness but I am hoping to prevent it getting worse. I am curious to find out what supplements other people are using for their dogs. And whether you use human grade supplements or animal grade. Thanks.
ish
One of my GSDs failed her hip xray, but luckily for the moment she shows no signs of soreness or lameness. To try to prevent it becoming a problem in the future, we started her on Sasha's Blend (which we were already using on our athritic 12 year old Golden Retriever with great success) and fish oil. The fish oil is which every human brand capsules are on special/best value for money. If your dogs xrays came back ok - could it be a muscular thing? Have you considered seeing a chiropractor or physio about it? Good luck
Poodle wrangler
Other things you can do to help are : Keep your dog lean & feed a "large breed" dry food (if you feed dry food, of course).
Cavandra
There was a study conducted on HD & Supplements, I just cant find where I saved it too! Anyway, it showed that the dogs on Ester C supplements showed marked improvement in their Hips after being on it for a period of time.......I think it also went on to show that youngsters raised on Ester C & their mother fed it through teh pregnancy had better hips in the pups. I am sure this study would be on this forum somewhere, maybe a search on "EsterC" may bring that thread up for you???
cavNrott
I use Joint Guard. Also Fish Oil and Glucosamine is now combined in one capsule so they get one of those a day as well. I did try Sasha's Blend but had no success with it at all.

Doesn't the Joint guard have Glucosamine in it? Is there such a thing as too much Glucosamine? Yes, I have also heard very good reports about Ester - C. I have large breed dogs so the extra Gluc. in the Fish Oil caps does no harm and hopefully some good. I also use Ester C.
InspectorRex
Our Vet, who is also a Master in Veterinary Chiropractics recommends Glucosamine Hydrochloride, the human quality one that you get from Health Food Shops. I think MicroGenics make it. Glucosamine Sulfate can upset the tummy that is why our Vet does not recommend it.

The glucosamine in JG is hydrochloride. However glucosamine isn't of much use really unless it's combined with Chondroitin. Glucosamine builds cartilage and the Chondroitin inhibits the enzymes that break down cartilage. Not much point IMO in building cartilage unless you can prevent it breaking down. Also gluc. hydrochloride is more bioavailable to dogs due to the molecular structure.
morgan
Vitamin C is essential as it improves the connective tissues to help keep the joint together. Ester C is a very good form of this as it is easily tolerated and not too acidic on the stomach. Syn-Flex from the US is the best form of glucosamine and chondroitin around, together with anti-oxidants, enzymes etc. As it is in liquid form it is much more easily absorbed than tablets or powders. At the moment they have it in beef flavour for pets, instead of just the apple flavour for people, which is used for pets as well.
cavNrott
I used to have Synflex sent over here but it has such a strong synthetic smell. It was back when I was using Cosequin and it became unavailable. I like the Joint Guard better than Synflex. Chipper
Thanks everyone. Joint Guard and Ester - C seem to be the way to go. Does anyone know of a stockist around south West Sydney? We have Pet Care 2000, Western Pet Foods and PetBarn to choose from. Also, I'm assuming Ester - C is purchased from a Health Food store? Once again, I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks muchly.
