Gomez the Norfolk
Been thinking of maybe giving Gomez a bone sometimes - not necessarily to replace a meal, but for him to chew and clean his teeth - I'm not even sure he will like it it, but thought I might try... What would be a good "intro" bone? Can bones be given as a snack? I want to keep him on his kibble as his main food source. I know that they should be raw and not weight bearing bones... He is 2 years old, weighs about 7.5 kilos and is healthy with no teeth problems. He does tend to gulp things rather than chew them nicely, so I think if I presented him with a chicken neck it would be swallowed whole thanks! laffi
Turkey necks, turkey wings would be the best option (chicken necks as well but only if he can't swallow them whole) Marrow bones are great but not very often due to high fat content.
KitKat
Go the lamb ribs/flaps You can even cut down the meat between the ribs to give him 'snack sized' pieces. Chook frames are also good - same with maryland pieces
he'smyhero
I would give him a marrow bone- one sliced down the middle so he can get to the marrow. These are great recreational bones, not too much meat attached but it will take him a while to get it off and to get all the marrow out. He also won't be able to try and swallow it whole! bloss344
If you try a marrow bone cut lengthwise, be aware that marrow is very rich and full of fat, and cutting it will make the marrow very accessable. A lot of dog's gets loose poops from it. Very nutritious though.
Gomez the Norfolk
thanks, I think we'll start with the ribs, they seem to be the "safest" bet for now, and work up to the wings and marrow bones - will he just chew, or do pieces come off and he swallows? Will there be anything left of the bone? How long should I let him go with it? do I need to adjust gis regular food at all?
Georgie-boy
I give my 2 lambs necks - they are small enough for them to put in their mouths and the bone is soft enough for them to really crunch up but hard enough to actually do some good. I have tried to find a butcher that has them cut lengthways but have yet to manage so for the time being I buy them from the supermarket. They are fairly cheap too - and 1 or 2 makes a whole meal! Sayreovi
Why not just buy a chicken frame and give it too him? Majority of dogs know exactly what to do with them. If you go with a frame you could replace a meal with it, or give it too him in the morning and halve what he gets at night.
